    1. [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Why move from Hull to Dublin?

    3. Hello friends, Contributors have helped me with suggestions in the past, so I will once again ask for some lateral thinking. My Great Great Grandfather Walter Pickering (1861-1950) was born in Bewholme, near Beverley, his father moved to Hull. I have details of him on the 1901 UK census. He does not appear on the Dublin 1911 census. The next record is his son marrying in Dublin in 1917. He was listed in the Thom’s gazette as a merchant and trader, also classified as a shop keeper on his death cert. I have not made any connection with other Pickering families in Dublin. I also checked his wife - Mary Ellen Gray's brother and sister to see if they moved to Ireland, but cannot see any evidence of that either. Why did Walter Pickering come to Dublin? Why would he leave a prosperous city such as Hull? His children were in their mid teens - an unusual time to uproot a family? I've checked the IGI and ancestry website but can't come up with anything. Can anyone suggest any other sources or lines of enquiry - maybe I am overlooking something obvious? Thank you in advance for any suggestions Deirdra Pickering
