My husband's maternal grandfather was a miner in County Durham with no connection with Yorkshire. He was in the East Yorkshire Regiment during WW1, returning to Co Durham after the war. By co-incidence he was stationed at Beverley Barracks at the same time as my paternal grandfather who joined the ER regiment in Bethnal Green, the place of his birth.
