Hi Maria, Thanks for that, it made interesting reading. Obviously having a child out of wedlock wasn't as frowned upon in those days as I had imagined. And judging by the gaps in my family tree it seems more like the norm than an isolated incident....!!! William's baptism was in Hatfield near Doncaster not Cottingham, and I mentioned it in passing, but I do have others in the Hull area and I'm hoping for more luck when I can get to the Hull archives. Especially my great grandmother who, although eventually married twice, had 4 sons in the workhouse while still single.
