Hi Folks, I wonder if any of you can help? Unusually (it's normally me being asked where places are) I am asking where places are in the modern world as opposed to 200 years ago (or thereabouts). Most of you will be aware of the Genuki "Where is it in Yorkshire" pages which contain information on all of the places mentioned on the 15,700+ Genuki Yorkshire pages. Some of these places I (and others) are unable to find in the modern world. I have generated a list of these places for each of the Ridings and any help would be appreciated. These lists are to be found on: East Riding: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/NoGR.html North Riding http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/NoGR.html West Riding http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/NoGR.html If you lose the above links, then they are also to be found under "Gazetteers" on the main Genuki Yorkshire page. Please use the email address given on the relevant page (you will need to turn on scripting if you can't see it). This will avoid my spam traps. I look forward to hearing from you. Hallo Richard If you are looking for Spaldington it is a small village between Market Weighton and Howden, not sure exactly how many miles. It is not far from where I live. Hello Colin I hope this information might be useful following your inquiry into modern locations of Yorkshire places. East Riding - Dairycoates Dairycoates appears to be a farm at North Ferriby (detached). It is visible on British History Online > Maps > Ordnance Survey 1:10,560 - Epoch 1 > England - Yorkshire > 240. On modern maps, this seems to coincide with Brighton Steet Industrial Estate HU3 4UW. Dairycoates locomotive shed, the largest on The North Eastern Railway had become so overcrowded with literally hundreds of engines that it had to be extended in 1915. It covered a large area south of Hessle Road. Dairycoates Avenue Hull HU3 5DB Dairycoates Industrial Estate, Freightliner Road, Hull HU3 4XR Best wishes Graham> Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2008 21:19:01 +0000> To: ENG-EAST-YORKS@rootsweb.com> From: Colin@Blunham.demon.co.uk> Subject: [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Where is it?> > Hi Folks,> I wonder if any of you can help?> Unusually (it's normally me being asked where places are) I am asking> where places are in the modern world as opposed to 200 years ago (or> thereabouts). Colin, Dairycoates:- Grid Ref: TA070270. 1st Ed 6 in OS map shows Dairycoates Farm at this location in a detached part of North Ferriby Township. It became the site of railway engine sheds. The 1st Ed 6 in OS map shows the boundary of the Town and County of kingston upon Hull a bit further to the east at the time of survey (1848-1852). Howden Price:- I think this refers to Haltemprice just south of Cottingham village. Grid ref:- TA043309. Now shown as Haltemprice Farm. 1st Ed 6 in OS map shows this farm as well the site of Halpemprice Priory and the area is described as Extra Parochial. Hull Bank:- 1st Ed 6 in OS map shows area to the west of the River Hull north of Hull from the Stoneferry area northwards as Hull Bank. There is a Hull bank House. This is shown on present OS map as Haworth Hall Grid ref:- TA088335. I'll see if I can do anything with the other locations you list when i get time.
