    1. [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Dunn families in ERY
    2. Alison Dunning
    3. I'm not really a "Dunn" researcher but we did have a Thomas Duggleby Dunn born in 1841 in Bishop Burton ERY who married Elizabeth Dunning (and had children with tongue-twisting-triple-barrelled names!). A bit later than both other researchers are looking at. If you look on the IGI there are lots of Dunn's listed in East Yorks Parishes. I particuarly noted Howden, South Cave, Beverley and Spaldington. It might be wise to spread your searches to neighbouring Parishes to get a better feeling for where the Dunn families were most common and search them as well. -- Alison M Dunning PhD Senior Research Associate Strangeways Research Laboratory Worts Causeway Cambridge CB1 8RN. 3. The militia were sent from all over the north of England to the east coast of Yorkshire to defend against possible attack by the French. My ancestor John Widdall of Oldham was in the Lancashire militia, married a Beverley girl in1799 & joined the East Yorks militia. 3. I too am interested in the DUNN name in ERY. All I have is a Richard DUNN "of Cottingham", who in 1797 was convicted of sheep stealing and sentenced to death in the York Assizes. The death sentence was later commuted to transportation to New South Wales for Life. I have a copy of the Court record and know a fair bit about his life in NSW, where he seems to have made good, but am finding it hard to trace his past life. From convict records he was born around 1772, but I don't know where. I currently have on loan the LDS Cottingham parish register film. From the IGI and the bits I have searched so far, DUNN does not seem to be a common name in Cottingham, with only the baptism of a Rebecca DUNN, to parents Richard and Mary DUNN, Jan 21, 1797. The only other Cottingham DUNN on the IGI is a John DUNN, mother Mary DUNN, no father named, bap 21 Aug 1779...this could be a brother to Richard, who named his first son in NSW, John. I will check this entry on the film, which presumably will say if he was illegitimate. There is also a marriage of a Mary CROSIER to Richard DUNN, 13 April 1796, in Cottingham, which is possibly his marriage. Rebecca DUNN was buried in Cottingham, on Nov 8, 1807, and the parish register records her parents as "Richard DUNN and Mary SPENCELY". By this time Richard was in NSW and the 7 years which have to pass before presumption of death had passed, so it is possible that Mary born CROSIER then DUNN had married a SPENCELY. I can't find such a marriage....of course she may not have married again, or she may have been a different Mary entirely. This is all I have on his origins. Other information is that it was a Mr W Garton of Langthorpe in the Parish of Swine who charged Richard with stealing his sheep from the Parish of Withernwick. His occupation was a wheelwright...would he have done an apprenticeship, and if so are there records? Does any DUNN researcher from around this area have him in their tree, or can anyone suggest where I go next?....I will continue to go through the Cottingham register, especially for a death of a Mary DUNN/CROSIER/SPENCELY. Thank you for any info or suggestions...I will be in Yorkshire in April/May, so can research on the spot. Jan South Australia

    3. Jan, Based on the information you supplied, from the IGI I think this could be your man. RICHARD DUNN Male Christening: 22 JAN 1774 North Frodingham, Yorkshire, England Parents: Father: RICHARD DUNN North Frodingham is close to Withernwick and Swine and not too far from Cottingham. I have family connections in all these places. You could possibly find that this is the same Dunn family that Sandy is asking about, as Brandesburton is also very near. 3. I just want to thank everyone who contributed info on the Dunn line from East Riding. Especially Graham...thanks so much! Does anyone know what historical occurrance may have caused the Irish to move to England during the 14th or 15th century? I know that everyone in my Dunn lineage has always claimed to be Irish, but I have a direct link to the Dunn's in Brandesburton [abt 1545] so am wondering when the Irish may have left Ireland for England. If anyone needs a lookup here in Texas, USA just send out a holler and I would be glad to look something up for you. 2. Hi, Not exactly answerig the question, but my line of Pickerings were from nearby Bewholme, where some of the Dunn family were extremely prolific - one family had 20 children in that parish. One of my ancestors was Mother to an illegitimate Dunn boy. Lots of records on microfiche in the Treasure House in Beverley. Also George WILES, b. c1829, Bridlington, who married Ann LANGSTON on 29 July 1848 at Flamborough - 8 children all born in Flamborough. 3. Hi Les and Pauline, I only see 3 children on the 1891 image as follows.... High Street, Marske, Guisborough Edwin Roxby, Head, m, 34, Blacksmith, b. Altofts Anna Maria Roxby, wife, m, 35, b. Rotheram (sic) Edith D. (or O.) Roxby, daur, 12, Scholar, b. Rotherham Florence S or J? Roxby, daur, 3, b. Middlesbro Blanche E. Roxby, daur, 1, b. Redcar Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 3999; Folio 8; Page 10; GSU roll: 6099109. If you are using Ancestry and go by the transcription page it lists a bunch of other children but it must be an error. If you click on the other names you end up with the image of a page from Thornaby???!!!! 3. Hi Tim, I have the South Cave Wiles in my family. The furthest back I have is William b. 1801, m. Charlotte Drewery in 1834. I've spent time trying to sort out the various 'clans' & have also found Marmaduke as a common name. I would love to find a direct link into my family - Marmaduke is too cool a name!- but no joy yet. Kind regards Siân -----Original Message----- From: eng-east-yorks-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:eng-east-yorks-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Victor Markham Sent: 10 February 2008 16:50 To: eng-east-yorks@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Marmaduke Wiles Tim I have a couple of Wiles names. The first is Mary Wiles born 1814 at Great Cowden. Mary became pregnant and took George Dixon to court. The court told him to pay 1s 6d a week (detauils in East Riding archives). Instead of paying that he married her! The other Wiles I have is Mary's father William born 1786 d. 1860. Somehow I have omitted to show his birth place. I will be doing some checking on this. William married Ann Ockleton in 1813 in Aldborough. Guess these are not in your areas of search?
