    2. Jan Holmes
    3. Hi Bill, Yes, I do! My GG Grandmother was Sarah Ann GREENWOOD, born in Beverley c1825. Sarah lost the GREENWOOD name when she first married John CAWKWELL in 1847, followed by my GG Grandfather John RAWLING in 1859, both in Hull/Sculcoates. Sarah Ann GREENWOOD was the illegitimate daughter of Frances Spencer GREENWOOD and several searches, including original parish registers in Beverley, have failed to find the baptism of Frances Spencer GREENWOOD c1791. Although without proof I haven't added this to my tree, I believe that Frances was the daughter of Christopher GREENWOOD and Ann SPENCER, who married in Beverley in 1777. I can find no children in Beverley on the IGI of Christopher and Ann. Hi Folks, I wonder if any of you can help? Unusually (it's normally me being asked where places are) I am asking where places are in the modern world as opposed to 200 years ago (or thereabouts). Most of you will be aware of the Genuki "Where is it in Yorkshire" pages which contain information on all of the places mentioned on the 15,700+ Genuki Yorkshire pages. Some of these places I (and others) are unable to find in the modern world. I have generated a list of these places for each of the Ridings and any help would be appreciated. These lists are to be found on: East Riding: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/NoGR.html North Riding http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/NoGR.html West Riding http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/NoGR.html If you lose the above links, then they are also to be found under "Gazetteers" on the main Genuki Yorkshire page. Please use the email address given on the relevant page (you will need to turn on scripting if you can't see it). This will avoid my spam traps. I look forward to hearing from you. 3. Hi Folks, What an amazing response to my request for locations of places ! Thank you all very much. I have had a total of over 100 messages and so far managed to deal with 33 of these. I have replied to each message as I have dealt with the contents, so if you have sent me a message and not received a response, don't worry, I'll get round to it in the next week or so. I am going to my mum's house in Grinton (Swaledale) at the weekend so there will be no progress for a couple of days, but don't let that stop you sending any places you can locate :-) I have updated the lists on the three pages after about 5 grid ref additions in an attempt to avoid duplication of effort. I should have mentioned that the Grid references are used to drive the "Nearby places" links at the top of each Genuki Yorkshire parish page which links you to maps and other information. The links to the pages are: East Riding: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ERY/NoGR.html North Riding http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/NRY/NoGR.html West Riding http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/NoGR.html Thanks again, Best wishes, Colin Hinson In the village of Blunham in Bedfordshire U.K. Webmaster for the Genuki Yorkshire pages: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ Old and Rare Yorkshire Books on searchable CDroms: http://www.YorkshireCDbooks.com

    3. Colin, Dairycoates:- Grid Ref: TA070270. 1st Ed 6 in OS map shows Dairycoates Farm at this location in a detached part of North Ferriby Township. It became the site of railway engine sheds. The 1st Ed 6 in OS map shows the boundary of the Town and County of kingston upon Hull a bit further to the east at the time of survey (1848-1852). Howden Price:- I think this refers to Haltemprice just south of Cottingham village. Grid ref:- TA043309. Now shown as Haltemprice Farm. 1st Ed 6 in OS map shows this farm as well the site of Halpemprice Priory and the area is described as Extra Parochial. Hull Bank:- 1st Ed 6 in OS map shows area to the west of the River Hull north of Hull from the Stoneferry area northwards as Hull Bank. There is a Hull bank House. This is shown on present OS map as Haworth Hall Grid ref:- TA088335. I'll see if I can do anything with the other locations you list when i get time. 3. Graham I was brought up in Hessle and just can't figure out how Daircoates could possibly be in the Parish of North Ferriby. As you say Dairycoates is 2 miles west of Hull. Hessle is another 2 miles further west followed by North Ferriby a further 2 miles (at least) west. In my younger days I was a frequent visitor to Dairycoates locomotive depot. In those days one could walk willy nilly among the locomotives. East Riding - Dairycoates Dairycoates appears to be a farm at North Ferriby (detached). It is visible on British History Online > Maps > Ordnance Survey 1:10,560 - Epoch 1 > England - Yorkshire > 240. On modern maps, this seems to coincide with Brighton Steet Industrial Estate HU3 4UW. It covered a large area south of Hessle Road. 1. [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Where is it?
    2. Colin Hinson
    3. 1. [ENG-EAST-YORKS] James LAWSON, Market Weighton cr. 1815
    2. Bridget Watson
    3. Hi List, This is my first posting and I do need help. My 3x gr. grandfather James LAWSON was buried in Market Weighton, age 28, on June 28, 1815. This is all I know of him, other than figuring out he was born cr. 1787, but I don't know where. His wife, Sarah (I think LEWIS, but am not 100% sure) must have been just pregnant when he died as she gave birth to a son, James Posthumous LAWSON, bapt. Feb. 21 1816 in Market Weighton, father stated as being James LAWSON an Ale House Keeper. Where can I write to have a search of P.R's done for a possible marriage? Any and all help appreciated. Cheers, Bridget in Canada GlamFHS # 5865 I transcribe for www.freebmd.rootsweb.com I use www.archivecdbooks.ca to help in my research

    3. As a member of the East Yorkshire Family History Society there is access to the East Yorkshire Marriage Index which has comprehensive coverage of this period. www.eyfhs.org.uk Peter B Message: 1 Date: Wed, 19 Mar 2008 17:06:13 EDT From: SCbugs@aol.com Subject: [ENG-EAST-YORKS] William Underwood marriage to Hannah about 1792 To: ENG-EAST-YORKS@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <c61.2954dfb4.3512da45@aol.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" I was looking for the marriage of William Underwood to Hannah about 1792. The first child (William) I know about was christened in Sculcoates on 30 Jun 1793. The second (John) was christened in Kingston Upon Hull on 21 June 1795. The next five were christened in Rowley near Hull. (Joseph, 25 Nov 1797; Hannah, 19 May 1799; James, 5 Jun 1803; Anne, 9 Jun 1805 and George, 24 Dec 1809) The father, William Underwood was buried in Rowley on 11 Nov 1809 at age 51. I found a William Underwood, christened 18 Feb 1758 in Brantingham who might be the same. His father was John. I did not find a marriage on Hugh Wallis' site in Brantingham for William, so I am presuming he married elsewhere. Would someone with the Boyd's marriage index see if there could be a match for William and Hannah? Thank you, Sharon Crowley Reno, Nevada, U.S.A.

    1. [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Renney/Wilson line circa 1800

    3. Is anyone researching the Renney line? I am particularly interested in a Renney whose wife was a Wilson. They would have married in the early 1800’s. James Renney was born about 1809 in Kingston upon Hull, but I have not been able to find a record of his birth. James tombstone in Simcoe County, Ontario says he died March 14, 1872 at the age of 63. Family lore says he had a brother John and his mother was a Wilson who married a Renney. Her family was not happy with their marriage as James Renney’s father was a commoner. James Renney married Elizabeth Grice on the 26th of August 1829 in Butterwick by Great Driffield, Yorkshire. She was the oldest daughter of David Grice and Elizabeth Weans. She was christened in January of 1813 so likely was born in late 1812. (Her christening and their marriage have been verified using records at the Family History Library in Salt Lake. The LDS marriage record did not give parents names.) James Renney and Elizabeth Grice Renney immigrated to Ontario, Canada around 1850 when one of Elizabeth Grice’s brothers moved to Kent County, Ontario. Elizabeth Grice’s brother, William Grice b: May 30, 1824 married Jane Pinkney (B: 1827 in Yorkshire) and appear in the 1851 census in Kent County, Ontario.
