    3. Neil, looking for relatives in London I came across the following which may or may not be of use:- 1891 Census. Hanover Square, Knightsbridge. RG12/0071, Folio 102, Page 27. 59 Eaton Place. Household of Annie Thorpe Ellen Oxtoby, servant, single, 20, ladies maid, born Saneton, Yorks Saneton is probably transcribed incorrectly and could be Sancton, Yorks. 1. [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Re Wills & Admons at Borthwick
    2. Deb Walker
    3. Hi Folks Regarding the recent thread about the wills/admons indexes at Borthwick...... I've actually never been to the Borthwick. However, I do have the postal address of a lady who goes there fairly regularly and who will for a very reasonable charge make you lists of entries from the indexes and also provide synopses (ie summaries) of any wills you want. I have used her loads in the past and it was always invaluable. For example, she has created me lists of all entries for a certain surname within a given period and also lists of all entries from the same village in a given period. I then chose which wills I want and get the synopses from her, or using the references she gives you can apply direct to Borthwick for a full copy if you prefer. She doesn't do email or computers (everything is handwritten), but if anyone wants her postal address please contact me off-list. Bye Deb in a damp Mirfield W Yorks

    3. Thank you, Chris. Where might the Administration Act Books be for residents of the Hull/Beverley area in the Georgian era? Do you have any experience of searching through these, presuming that they are unindexed? For any 10 year period, say 1730-40 or 1810-20, would there be tens, hundreds, thousands or more names? In other words, what is the degree of difficulty or how much should you know before looking? 3. I have looked at the entry in both Ancestry and TheGenealogist, and I would say that "relation to head of family" has been left blank. There is simply a black vertical stroke. I magnified the image to 125%, and it is quite clear. Sorry. I don't think that's what you wanted to hear. Arlene Arlene V. 3. Hello Neil I have just found the family in 1881, living in Sancton. You'll find them on www.familysearch.org.uk [RG11/4734]. Have you tried looking through all the pages for Sanctonin 1891 - there are only 14 pages - as it may have been transcribed wrongly. The first name on the first page is Robert Pears aged 50 born in Seaton Ross. If you search for him, then go through the pages, hopefully you'll find them. I haven't time to look for you, sorry!! 3. Bill, The National Probate Register lists grants of administration after 1858. For the intestate, grants of letters of administration by church courts prior to this are recorded in the relevant Administration Act Books for the diocese concerned if they survive. Practice varied from place to place I think. Indexes to wills for some counties (e.g. that part of Lancashire in the diocese of Chester) also include an index to grants of administration, but this may not be the case elswhere. The majority of those dying intestate will have no grant of administration.
