According to Kelly's 1926, 160 Beverley road was Sculcoates Union Poor Law Institution - William Richmond Stedman, master, Mrs L.A. Stedman, matron. Antony > > Was 160 Beverley rd a workhouse, poorhouse or hospital as I have noticed > multiple burials from the same address?? >
My gg granfather was Francis Cherry who died Lockington 1853 . On his wife's tombstone his date of birth is given as 17/11/1785 . the 1851 census gives his birthplace as North Ferriby. As one of his daughters was called Eleanor Constable I was pleased to find a marriage on the IGI of a Cherry and an Eleanor Constable in North Ferriby but cant find a birth for Francis on the bishops transcript although there are children from the marriage there . Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Anne

Hi Dawn, 160 Beverley Road, Hull, appears to be Kingston General Hospital (pulled down this year), formerly Sculcoates Workhouse, as streets either side of it are at 134 and 168 Beverley Road. For a history and pictures of it go to http://www.workhouses.org.uk and click on England, Yorkshire East Riding , Sculcoates. This site has Workhouses from all over UK. Bob, in E Yorks.
Does anyone know of a site that would give a list of the Rectors that have served in Everingham. I am interested in the time frame of 1700-1800. Hi Dawn, The above address was the Sculcoates Workhouse and as you rightly said, there are an awful lot of burials. Kind regards. Jean-HULL
Hi List, Was 160 Beverley rd a workhouse, poorhouse or hospital as I have noticed multiple burials from the same address?? Thanks Dawn
Hi List, Thank you for the email...I really didn`t think that offering to help others as I have been helped so kindly on this list, would cause offence to anyone...I just wanted to put a bit back into helping others. I know how hard researching can be and how delighted we all feel when we have a breakthrough...however small, and I put aside my whole Sunday in order to do the lookups for people. Four people who answered my posting asked where the booklets came from, and I have emailed back with EYFHS address so that they can purchase the books themselves.....I myself did not know that the booklets existed until 3 weeks ago when someone from this list kindly told us all about them. I myself am now looking into volunteer transcribing...so that I can give something back...and I would be more than happy for anything I transcribe to be seen by as many people as possible as that is the whole point...to make treeing research more widely available to everyone. If I have offended anyone then I apologise, but any offence was unintentional, Dawn
Hi Jeanette and Barbara, I am sure that you know each other already...but I couldn`t help noticing that you are both researching the same surname Just thought I would mention it in case you do not know about each other, Dawn
Hi Mary, Colin, Karen, To be honest I hadn`t even thought about it...I just wanted to help anyone out there the same as they have helped me at times, I don`t think that there is anyone on this list that hasn`t either asked for a look up at some point or done one for someone else. Until two weeks ago I didn`t even know that these booklets existed until some kind person on here put a posting up with the EYFHS address. However, I won`t post an offer like that again, in that way, if it might cause offence....I had just assumed that we were all trying to help each other as much as possible and I know that we have all supported and promoted the use of the FHS as I have found them extremely helpful at all times. Best wishes, Dawn
Hello List I am presently subscribed to several Rootsweb lists, so apologies if you receive this message - or versions of it - more than once. Though new to the List, I'm not new to Genealogy. Here's my interests in the area, in case anyone recognizes them: ATKINSON (penny a pound, I know, I know... sigh) Henry Atkinson was born in Great Stainton DUR abt 1821; married Jane Tweddle in 1843; residing in Aycliffe by 1851; dies about 1856; widow Jane in Stranton DUR by 1861 & marries Thomas ABDALE; son John marries Jane Ann Stewardson in Scarborough ERY 1864; they all immigrate to Philadelphia, USA in 1871. John worked on the Stockton-Darlington Railway. HARDY My GGGgrandmother Ann Hardy (b. Snainton YKS 1816), married William Stewardson in Brompton ERY in 1838. Ran the family Inn in Malton YKS (1850s), then the "Railway Station Inn" Stockton DUR (1860s). Her father Robert resided as an AgLab in Snainton (1841) & West Heslerton (1851). He may have married Jane Goodill in Scarborough 1811. STEWARDSON before 1770 poss. from Ainsty YKS>1770-circa1860 West Heslerton/Yedingham ERY (also York city during 1840s)>Stockton DUR 1860s onward. My GGGgrandfather William Stewardson (Jr., b. W.Heslerton YKS 1811) married Ann Hardy 1838, worked his way up from Ostler to Innkeeper during 1840s & 1850s in West Heslerton, York, & Malton. Ran the White Horse Inn in Malton(?) upon his death in 1856. Son John may have worked for Inland Revenue. WILSON William Stewardson (Sr., b. West Heslerton 1782) seems to have married Hannah Wilson in Wetwang/Fimber ERY 1807. She appears to have died in W. Heslerton 1822. Wilson cousins may have resided in the W.Heslerton area - Lucy Wilson (probable cousin) appears as witness on the marriage certificate of Hannah's granddaughter, Jane Ann Stewardson, in Scarborough 1864. Surnames of individuals who married my ancestors various siblings, cousins, etc. in the area during the 19th century (info may be limited): HUMPHRAY (victualler, SherburnERY 1838>FalsgraveERY1881) KIRBY RICHARDSON (cabinet maker, Stockton1871,1881) SNOWDON (clerk, Stockton1872>York city>Stockton1881) TAIT (coppersmith, Durham?>Staffs1879>London1881) Also possible ancestors of Hannah Wilson - NEWLOVE in Wetwang/Fimber 1700s. Thanks for your time in reading all this. Regards, Thomas Wetten USA
Hi Dawn: I for one thank you for publishing any thing at all on the list for everyone to use. I am one who has been stung for many pounds by idiot professional researchers. Not one time have I received any information from these so called professionals. Without fail, everytime I have sent any money, I get a notice saying "sorry your ancestor can not be found." Angry? Yes I am. Please forgive my anger but please understand how stupid I am. I have spent over two hundred pounds this year alone without one result from any professional. Researching for hours? Damn their efforts. We all will get more results by staying in touch with the people who are the owners of that info, people like you and me.----Jim Brasher PS Don't feel too sorry for these people who publish info on our ancestors with out asking us.
William BRUMBY (b:1823 Tuxford, NTT) married Elizabeth (?). Possilbly in 1853 to Elizabeth ARBON is Sculcoates....another possibility is Elizabeth BARBER in 1838. They had children in 1853-1863 timeframe...Ann, William Burder, John Tom, Elizabeth Amelia, and Alice BRUMBY. They were all christened at Holy Trinity at Kingston Upon Hull. William Burder BRUMBY (1855) married Annie Matilda ROLFE in 1875 Hull, and lived as a cabdrivere at Bourne Street Livery Stable in Sculcoates in 1881. I believe her parents were Henry and Susannah ROLFE since they were also living in Sculcoates. Looking for any connections. Pete Hanson
I am researching the surnames DOBSON & DALTON in the Preston, East Yks area. Would love to hear from anyone with similar interests. Christine in Melbourne Australia.
Hi, Dawn Whilst I appreciate Colin's sentiments, I doubt very much that you are breaching copywright. You purchased booklets. In my opinion you have the right to offer to do look-ups. Good for you! Hi Dawn, You really should not be advertising look-ups from currently available books/booklets etc. By doing this you are depriving the FHS of income and probably breaching their copyright. Would you like it if you put weeks of work into reasearching and publishing a book and then the first person to buy it advertised that they would do look-ups for the rest of the world from your book?
