Hi folks, Whilst it may seem at first sight to be a good idea to post your Great Grandparents names on the list, experience shows that in practice this is *not* a good idea and there are better ways of going about it. Why is it not a good idea? Well, first of all it means that a lot of the subscribers to the list are going to post to the list. Now, I don't know how many subscribers Kevin has on this list, but lets say it's 600 and that 66% of them post their messages. This means that each and every one of us is going to receive and extra 400 messages in around about a week - I don't know about you, but I really don't wish to recieve that many emails. If you want to see the effect on a list, have a look in the West Riding List archives (look for "Great Grandparents") or you could have a look in the Yorksgen archives and see the madness caused on the list by the posting of "My birthday is xx of xxxxxx", along with various other subjects. Another reason why it's not a good idea is that people only get a "fleeting glance" of the names at the time they are posted, and then they are gone. OK, I know that they go into the archives, but how many people know that they are archived, let alone how to access the archives? Not very many judging by the number of people who don't know how to unsubscribe which is far easier. What is the objective of posting the names? Well, it is a fact that you could be very lucky and another lister will make a connection with one of your names, but because of the fleeting nature of the list, the person making the connection needs to be a member of the list at the time of posting, so the odds are stacked against this although not impossible. Of course you should have posted these names when you subscribed to the list or shortly after, and then updated them periodically - say once every three months or more. So, what are the alternatives? Well, the main one is to submit your names for inclusion on the YKS surnames interest list run by Magdalena and whose update postings you must have seen on this list. http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/YKSlist/ By posting your interests to this list you ensure that they are there for all to see *all* the time and also that they get included in the various search engines. There are of course other surnames interest lists for the various counties, and in some cases, single name lists. In conclusion may I ask people please *not* to post to the list as was requested? Of course all the above is only my opinion, but I hope I have explained it so that you can see it makes sense. My apologies to Colin as I sent the first message to him instead of the list. I agree with Colin. I am truly thankful that the ggpts postings are over for WYks. My reasons are as follows: 1. Many of the ggpts were not of the Ridings and not even of Yorkshire in some instances. 2. I didn't note a particular number, but I don't think there were many connections to ancestors. 3. I believe that subscribers to the lists post their interests often enough to generate any similar interests in surnames. 4. Some of us have ggpts that were already in the US, Canada, Australia, etc. For example, I am looking for ancestors born in the late1700's and before which is several generations removed from ggpts. Hi list, I think I have just found a link with the GT grandparents idea..and have just emailed the person who posted about CARLILLs in Elloughton because I am pretty sure that I am connected to them so maybe it`s a good idea...and we can always delete if we don`t want the emails...It`s nice to have the choice and even if it is a remote chance it is worth the effort. Peter B: Is your posting in favor of paying.?
Hi to all, If anyone has the Marriage Indexes for Hull I would be most grateful for a look up to see if the above marriage can be found. The only information I have is that George FRITH was born c1810 and Mary c1816. They lived in Lincolnshire after they married and indeed may have married in GRIMSBY but so far I have not found it there. So, I thought that seeing Mary? was born in HULL they may have married here. I am not able to get into the Local Studies Library myself at the moment so any help would be most welcome Kind regards. Jean-HULL
I would appreciate any information on William Allott or William George Allott. Both apparently came from the Barnsley / Sheffield area (although other documents mention being born in Hull district) were of similar age and were both iron founders. Firms founded by one or the other William : Allott and Thelwall & Allott & Daniels William George died in 1912 aged 82. This puts his birth around 1830 but can find no trace. Help PLEASE ! TIA Paul Dunham
Rosemary, I can find Spittle Street running between the Groves and Jennings Street in Sutton Ward on various maps between about 1863 and 1909. I'm not sure if this may be the same street as Spittal. Also I am not sure if it is still there, though I suspect not. Regards Chris Watson Hi List, On a marriage cert I have the address as SPITTAL However, the S does not look like the S in STUTTON but looks like the S in STREET th TT lookes like the TT in SUTTON. I tried the search engines and my Hull map does not have Sutton area. Does anyone remember this street? Rosemarie California
Hi Cousins, I have updated the Trees - DFT (Java) & Legacy (HTML). 18687 Pers. in 5781 Families. I have now dumped the www2html programm I was using for the HTML pages as this wouldn't work on large families. All that's missing is the Location/Surname lists but this doesn't seem necassary as the locations are now included in the names lists. Please look, enjoy and comments are welcome, Thanks, Kev webmaster of www.shucksmith.org & www.lincolnshire-wolds.org -- Homepages:> http://www.shucksmith.org & http://lincolnshire-wolds.org P. S. My gg grandfather was Francis Cherry who died Lockington 1853 . On his wife's tombstone his date of birth is given as 17/11/1785 . the 1851 census gives his birthplace as North Ferriby. As one of his daughters was called Eleanor Constable I was pleased to find a marriage on the IGI of a Cherry and an Eleanor Constable in North Ferriby but cant find a birth for Francis on the bishops transcript although there are children from the marriage there . Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated. Anne
