    2. TheGoods
    3. Hi I was wondering if someone could look up an address for me on the 1871 Census. William Markham and his family were living at 4 Three Crowns Yard, Sutton, Yorks in 1881 and I would like to know if they were at this address in 1871. William was a Blacksmith and seemed to move around a lot. Eastrington and Hemingborough have been mentioned. Is anyone else interested in this family and doing any research? Many thanks Freda Good Malvern

    2. Noel Flower
    3. Hi All, Re census CD's. I am thinking of buying a set to cover Yorkshire. Can someone tell me if some sets are transcribed while others are digitised (which means scanned). If the dearer ones are transcribed I would much prefer them as they are then searchable by the computer instead of by me. Regards Noel

    1. [ERY] Disgusting material on the Genuki site
    2. Colin Hinson
    3. Hi Folks, You may have seen the postings about "disgusting material on the Genuki site". I assure everyone that there is no "disgusting" material on the Genuki site, and that the references to this were in fact medical and not on the Genuki site anyway. At the moment, my time is very precious to me and I have had to spend about 3 hours trying to sort this problem out when in fact it's nothing to do with me! Let me explain: A member of one of the lists was looking for the archives of the North Yorks list, and for reasons unkown associated this with Genuki. The search phrase that was entered on the search engine brought back many pages, but one of this contained a result of another search done by someone who had used the same phrase plus another couple of words referring to male genitals and who had logged the results. On this second page there was consequently the results of the search for the Genuki data plus the search for the second two words. Following the reference on the second level page brings back no reference whatsoever to the search quoted, as the page now at that URL contains the results of a different search. The cached page contains many medical references plus a single Genuki reference. *Please* remember that I only have control over pages on the Genuki site - ie. sites that start with: http://www.genuki.org.uk/ and mainly those pages which start with: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ so asking me to deal with material on some other site, even if it refers to Genuki is not likely to do much good. Please also remember that: 1. Genuki has nothing to do with the Mailing lists (such as the one(s) you are reading this from. 2. Mailing lists are not "sites" but "lists", though some of them may have a web site associated with them. Referring to "the West Riding site" is not helpful ! 3. The mailing lists that you are reading this from are controlled by Rootsweb, and it is to the Rootsweb site that you need to go to get information which you may have lost if you threw away your "welcome" message. Thanks folks. 1. [ERY] City of York FHS 1851 Census CDs
    2. the-simpsons
    3. Can anyone suggest reasons why the 1851 Census Index CDs produced by the City of York FHS are so expensive when compared to others currently available? It would cost £64 GBP to acquire all 8 sections, some of which cover quite small areas, in terns of geography and population. When that figure is set against the LDS 1881 National Census (£32), S & N's Yorkshire 1891 (£49.95) or even Stepping Stones 1841 North & East Riding (£26.95), all of which are either digitised images or transcriptions, it seems a lot for indexes only. I accept the need for costs to be covered and some profit for future projects. However, these prices seem to me to be somewhat excessive. Could not the data have been compressed on to fewer CDs? Could the CDs be sold as "sets" at a discounted price? Perhaps someone from the Society would care to comment? Andy Simpson Middlesbrough

    3. I wonder if someone on the list could steer me in the right direction. I have a Mary DOBSON who had 3 illigitimate children born in Easington, East Yks. John 1760, William 1762 & Robert 1768. I'm sure she must have needed parish relief to help with the support of these children & wondered which records are available. There was a bastardy record for William where Mary named the alleged father as William DUGGLEBY of Benningholme Grange. Hoping to find more information on Mary & her sons. Regards Christine McLean Melbourne Australia.

    2. James BROUGHTON
    3. Hullo once again to All Listers, I'm back on the List again seeking help from the always obliging Yorks Listers. I have been given information that a Walker BROUGHTON, was born in HULL, or at least the birth was registered there, during the Dec Qtr, 1892. Could SKS with acknowledge of the available records maintained by the County Archives or Family History Centre please tell me if there is any way that I can obtain Family information on him without having to purchase his Birth Certificate. ?? I thought that maybe Newspapers, Census Records, or something similar may be available to scan. I do believe that he had a sister named Doris and a brother, Donald, but I am not certain where they are arranged in order of seniority. Younger or older, that is. If any Lister can be of assistance I will be most grateful. Regards, Jim, Queensland, Australia

    3. >Graham Freeman was asking I wonder if anyone has any information about the Bethesda Chapel, Osborne St, Hull about 1857. < The book "Lost Churches and Chapels of Hull" by David Neave ISBN 1-872167-29-2 gives the following description - "Bethesda Chapel, Osborne Street - built 1842 as an Independant chapel in a crude Decorated style similar to the Mariners' Church. Seating for 500. Taken over by Danish Lutherans in 1850. Rebuilt as St Nicolai's Danish Lutheran church in 1871." A sketch of both the above is given in the book, as is one of the Mariners' Church in Dagger Lane.
