Hello list Having recently re-subscribed following the discovery of more information related to my WALLIS family, I posted a look up request which doesn't appear to have got through. So I will try again. My 3xG.Grandfather, John Bean WALLIS, is recorded as being a Veterinary Surgeon on his son's, John Petchell WALLIS, marriage certificate. John Bean according to the IGI, but not confirmed, was married to Mary HERON on 3.10.1817 at Garton with Grimston, they then moved to Cheshunt in Hertfordshire where John Petchell was born (confirmed by 1881 census) however by 1856 John Petchell was back in Hull being married to Elizabeth HALL. My request, following that lengthy introduction, involves sks with access to a trade directory for the Garton area, looking to see if there is a vet with the name of John Bean WALLIS. Many TIA Best wishes Julie Nicholls Gt. Yarmouth Norfolk

Hi Listers Following certain requests for information can I point out the following: 1.Birmingham Library refers to them as National Wills Index 2. The front page says:Calendar of all grants of probate & letters of administration made in the Probate registries(apologies if I didn't copy that right) of the High Court of Justice in England, together with the Northern Ireland probates & letters of administration, Scotch confirmations & colonial grants sealed in England during the year. 3. The period covered is 1853-1972. 4. I am happy to do look ups providing I have a date or 5 year period. I have not asked about photocopying, the library does not have locker facilities and the thought of trundling larges books as well as bags does not appeal. 5.Your rellie may have left a will which was not discovered or proved until later. Hello list have re-subscribed having found new information about my WALLIS family. My 3x g.grandfather is recorded on his son's marriage certificate as a veterinary surgeon. His name is John Bean WALLIS. There is a marriage between someone of this name and a Mary HERON on 3rd October 1817 listed in the IGI, taking place in Garston with Grimston. My request is could sks with access to a Trade Directory do a look-up to see if there is a vet of this name in this area around that time. I know the family moved to Hertford at some time, because that is where his son John Petchell WALLIS was born, but they were back in the Hull area by the time he was married in 1856. Many thanks in advance. Best wishes Julie Nicholls (nee WEST) Gt. Yarmouth Norfolk
I think the Malt Shovel must have been the local pub. When I lived in Swanland in the late 1960s/early 1970s I was told that the pub was closed due to the coachman getting drunk and driving the coach service into the village pond. From then on Swanland remained a dry village until the 1980s Sean Fugill
Hello all... I have been on these lists for a short while now and have had some success with my name interests but am still looking for more.(Aren't we all though) If anyone out there has any of the above names in their tree I would love to hear from you. These names tend to be in the areas of Goodmanham,York, Pocklington, Slingsby, Malton. But I am sure that they do not stay stricktly in these places. My BROUGH name seems to be from Arras. John BROUGH was a farm foreman at Arras farm I believe, around June of 1909. I have a Wilson BROUGH, being the father of John BROUGH. I have not been able to locate Wilson on the 1881 census so was wondering if anyone has any ideas as of how to go about finding him. I had originally thought that he might have already died by the time of the 1881 census but I have since recieved the marriage cert for John and Wilson is down as a Laborer on it. If he was already deceased would he be down as having a profession? I think not myself. I hope that this message is not too long winded for anyone. Forever hopeful, Beverley Preston, BC, Canada
Hi, In 1901 William WATSON is enumerated at the Malt Shovel in Swanland. Does anybody know where in Swanland this was? William was 87, born South Cave. I believe he was the son of Thomas WATSON and Mary WATSON nee HOPPER. In 1851 he was in Walkington with his wife Ann and they were in Swanland in 1881. Hi All Since I posted my offer for lookups for wills indexes I have had lots of enquires about where they are held and if they can be purchased. I can only tell you that the ones that I use are large, heavy, hardback books held in Birmingham Central library. Each year is split into parts of the alphabet A-C etc - a lot of books to hump around. The period is 1853 -1972. I can do lookups but I need a name and dates (maximum 5 year period) Cheers LL

Hi All Due to difficult circumstances I was unable to complete all the previous requests for look ups from the National wills indexes 1853 - 1972. I am now in a position to start looking again. Some of you may have already found the information you are looking for so for those that haven't please resend your requests. Maria Borrill & Margaret Rackham - I will be looking for yours on Saturday (last weekend was a washout). Cheers LL
hello cousins Henry Schofield was born 23 February 1841 at Holt House Farm, Longline, Dore, near Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. His father was David Schofield, b 1810. His mother was a Laycock, first name lost: (her father was John Laycock, 1780 - 1866). I'm hoping the 1871 Census may give me, at least, her first name. Henry emigrated to New Zealand in 1864 in the sailing ship MERMAID. He kept a diary of the voyage. In 1866 he married Mary Cattermole (born 1846, Suffolk), and in 1868 he and his wife went back to England for five years to stay with his parents, therefore they were at home for the 1871 Census. So I'm looking for David Schofield, 61, Head; X, wife; Henry, son of the head, 30; Mary daughter-in-law, 25; and Elizabeth, 3, BORN NEW ZEALAND; plus William Ball, 1 or infant. I have a photo dated 1872 of this family. As they returned to New Zealand (1873), the two oldest children died of cholera. The new baby survived. Thank you! I need help from any Lister who may be researching the WALKER Surname and can supply me with information on James WALKER, born in either 1891 or 1893 to Mary **** (possibly Mary Hope WALKER) James is my late father, and although he indicated that he was born in Surrey, UK, in Oct 1891, search by Professional Researchers have failed to find any information about him. Information handed down by my family states that his mother, Mary, later married or co-habitated with a John BROUGHTON and James adopted that Surname. James went to sea as a boy in the British Merchant Navy and eventually settled in Australia. Any information or assistance would be gratefully appreciated. Jim, Queensland, Australia
Hello Listers I have been told by a kind member of the LINCS list that a Robert JOHNSON married Mary BLACKSTON at Saint John and Saint Martin, Beverley, Yorkshire on 8 Feb 1779. I think they may be the parents of my Frances JOHNSON who married Robert ROEBUCK at Sculcoates in 1814 and I'm trying to prove it. Would it be possible for SKS to see if there is a Stephen JOHNSON bp with the above parents c1784 or perhaps another child bp 1779-1783 that I do no know about. On the 1851 census, Stephen gave his birth place as Hull so it's possible they have already moved there by 1784. Hull is such a big place that I thought it was worth checking out Beverley first. Robert and Mary JOHNSON then moved to Barton Upon Hull by 1786 and Laceby by 1793 where subsequent children were baptised so they have been difficult to track down. Any help would be much appreciated. Kind Regards Sue Sharman Picton, NZ
