Many thanks to those of you over the last 4 years have encouraged me to track down this now rare name - just 46 in the 1901 census. The list will cover all the usual variations - CUMMERSTONE, CUMSON, CUMPSON, COMPSTON, COMPSON, etc and I welcome new members so will be delighted if you can pass the message on to other lists. The usual rootsweb rules apply for joining: Briefly (very), people can subscribe in mail mode by sending a message to CUMPSTON-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word subscribe and nothing else. (90) Details can be found at the following address:- http://www3.open.ac.uk/courses/bin/p12.dll?C02A173 The course seems very much for beginners researching in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with a very surprising concentration on oral, visual and narrative evidence. Official documents such as censuses and civil registration of birth marriage and death form just one of what the OU describes as the five heading "blocks". (presumably this is OU speak for the topics covered or modules within the course) Articles about this course will probably appear in OU magazines and other publicity in the Autumn as I have just done an interview for an OU staff writer's article on genealogy. I have asked for details to be forwarded to me for the December Magazine and will of course pass these on as soon as they arrive. However if anyone sees anything about this course perhaps they would pass them on to me at the Society Else Else Churchill Genealogy Officer Society of Genealogists, 14 Charterhouse Buildings, London, EC1M 7BA Tel +44 020 7702 5488 Fax +44 020 7250 1800. Hi Alan, In my 1955 Street Guide of Hull there is a Rifle Terrace at 113 Walker Street, and Walker Street is off Gt Thornton Street. Perhaps Harrow Street was only part built in 1891? Bob, in Elloughton.

Hello! Listers, I am looking for information about this Corps. I have a photograph taken pos. 1870's-1880's. None of the soldiers are identified but I think one of them was my ggf William Henry Moss b.1856. It may have been taken outside Londesborough St. Barracks. Is there anyone with a particular interest in this Regiment whom I could consult with or would like to see/have a copy of it when I am in Yorkshire? I have a Book "EYVI 1859-1908 "by R. Wilson & G A Collinson and found it most informative. Carol Martin
Hi Listers I have finally made it on to the 1901 census, and have found 2 addresses for relatives living in Hull but don't know were they are. 1st address 81 HARROW STREET, I have found this on my copy of the 1891 census but there is no 81 listed. 2nd address is listed as RIFLE TERRACE again I am unable to find this on the 1891 Census. Can anyone please help Alan (Scarborough)
I am trying to establish who and where Francis Fugill (marrried Hannah Woodmansey, Marfleet 26/11/1792) came from. I am advised that there was a Francis born 8/2/1769 at Great Givendale to John Fughill, but am unclear how I can firmly establish the linkeage. Can anybody help out there? Thanks Sean

Reposting in hopes of help with this brick wall - is anyone out there researching a William Dobson who has come across info that doesn't fit for them, but might fit into the following: William H. Dobson, b. March 25, 1824, Yorkshire (probably Hull) Father probably a merchant, possibly in the shipping business Mother possibly French, siblings unknown Ran away to sea at abt. age 16 (1840 or so), reportedly to avoid ecclesiastical school Came to US abt. 1848 Given occupations during his lifetime: chandler, clothing merchant & clerk, & mason Reportedly had Dobson cousins who settled in Philadelphia, PA who were in the carpet manufacturing business I know there are a lot of Dobsons in Yorkshire - but I do keep trying. Any scrap of information, or suggestions on how to proceed would be very welcome. Many thanks - Susan Dobson

You will not find any maiden names on the census records. What you need is the ref number from the BMD records and order ther marriage certificates. Hi All, Well I only joined this list a few days ago, and thanks to a number of people that replied to my initial questions, I have at long last made some headway tracing my family tree ....YAHOOOO, so a big thank to those people. I have manged to find my Grandma's parents, she was Lillian Atkinson from Sculcoates. Her father was Mark Atkinson and her mother was Mary Ann Atkinson (maiden name Woodcock). Besides Lillian, there were 4 other children, Ada, Arthur Mark, Mary Lumly and Gladys Theresa, and they were all living at 1 Clarendon Ave, Sculcoates. I am still searching for info on my Grandad William Fyfe, who was brought up from a very young age by a couple called Beauchamp. However I can now confirm that this was William Hansell Beauchamp and his wife Ellen. In 1901 they are listed as living at 2 James Street, Sculcoates, he was aged 30 and she was 27. At this time they had no children and there was just the two of them living at this address. Can anyone hazard a guess as to how William Fyfe might have ended up with the Beauchamps? I don't think there was any form of legal adoption back in the early 1900's, but certainly there must have been childrens homes. I seem to have come to a full stop as far as finding William's real father who was Alexander Fyfe. I searched for the name on the 1901 census and only about 8 or 9 matches came up for the whole of the country. Two of those were under the age of 10 and the others all lived miles away. I have looked for Alexander Fyfe on various Scottish sites, but Fyfe is as common a name there, as Smith is in England so it's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack. As always I would be very grateful for any help, or a gentle shove in the right direction, with any of the names that I'm researching :-) Linda _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
