Hello all... I would like to ask SKS a really big favor. I need a couple of look-ups in the 1881 census. I have the 1881 census CD's, but have not been able to find either of these families. I think maybe that I am doing something wrong as I have not had this problem with anyone else that I have searched for. I am looking for: John Thomas PARKER---age about 27---born Thorpe Bay, Lincolnshire (birth from the 1901 census) Ann BLANCHARD---age about 32---born Lund (birth also from 1901 census) Any help with this would be greatly received. Thanks, Beverley, BC, Canada
Hello all... I was wondering if I could ask SKS to do a look-up for me on the 1891. I am looking for the town of Goodmanham. The family of PARKER is who I seek. I understand that Goodmanham is a quite small village so I am hoping that this is not a huge favor to ask. John PARKER---age about 37 Ann PARKER---age about 42 Frances Ann PARKER---age about 5---born Goodmanham Blanch PARKER---age about 1 yr---probably born Goodmanham Any info that is found would be greatly received. Thanks so much, Beverley, BC, Canada
It could mean that he was a qulified clergyman but was at that time unnattached to any particular parish. My Prep school used to play cricket against Marton Hall in the 1930s. I hit a six there. It is a lovely setting. Richard.
Could be Curer of Souls, which I think denotes that he could be a Rector of a church rather than just the plain title Priest or Clerk in Holy Orders. J.M.C.
Hello all... Well, I have a question. If a birth cert. has the mother down as the informant, does this most likely mean that the father was deceased? I have a birth cert. here that is for a Frances Ann PARKER, dated 28 June 1886, Goodmanham. Her father is listed as being John Thomas PARKER but the informant is Ann PARKER (mother). I have not been able to find even Frances on the 1901 census. She should have been about 15 in 1901. She was married in 1906 in Goodmanham, so I am assuming that she never strayed far from her home town. Any suggestions as to what my next move should be? I was also wondering, if by chance, there was anyone out there that might be able to do a search for the parents of Frances? They would be John Thomas PARKER and Ann BLANCHARD. Any help here would be very appreciated. Thanks, Beverley, BC, Canada
Dear list, At Marton Hall, Sewerby, in 1881 the head of the home is given as Charles HUDSON, and his occupation as 'Clergyman No Cure of Souls'. Does this mean he was just an unconvincing clergyman, or can anyone suggest what the meaning could be. The details are taken from the CD's, so there may be some mis-transcribing. Thanks Martin Cross Brighton
Hi List Would one of you kind souls who has an index of Beverley and sub districts please look to see if there is a Stokes family, living in Beverley area in the 1851 census? My husband's ancestor Francis Stokes was born in North Dalton in about 1820. This was written in a family bible. I understand North Dalton is about 10 miles from Beverley. Thanks so very much, Sandy Stokes in Ontario, Canada
I have been unable to find a Robert Lownsborough in the 1841 and 1851 censuses. The Lownsborough/Lonsborough name is very variable and any spelling is likely to be correct. There are 3 of them in east Yorkshire born 1805/1810. One is born and living in Garton on the Wolds who we are not interested in. The one we are interested in should be in the area bounded by Beverley/Hornsea/ Hull and the sea. If anyone with access to any of these censuses is willing to do a lookup I would be very grateful. Hi Sylvi There was a workhouse in Hull called the Sculcoates Union Workhouse which was established in 1844 on Beverley Road. This became Kingston General Hospital and was demolished to make way for a new school. I have a photograph of this building taking in 1904 in a book called 'Images of England' Kingston Upon Hull, The second selection by Paul Gibson. Also in the same book is a photograph of what was the Hull Workhouse of 1852 on Anlaby Road. The workhouse became Western General Hospital and was demolished to make way for a forecourt for the new 14 storey Hull Royal Infirmary. Hope this of some use. Freda Good Malvern
Hi All, Below is the list of updates to the Genuki Yorkshire site for the past 3 weeks. It's mainly church photographs, but I know there is a lot of interest in these. Please remember that there is a very large amount of information about Yorkshire on the Genuki site - History, Directories, Gazetteers, etc. etc. 99.9% of the "Where is" questions can be answered without having to ask on the list by referring to the "Where is it in Yorkshire" pages within this site (but please read the notes!!).
