    3. Hi Folks Has anyone heard of 'Norman Ashton's Progressive Christian Brotherhood', which operated in Hull in about the 1910's or thereabouts? I would be interested to hear anything about it, and whether you have any ideas on where there may be any records relating to it. I'd be grateful for any ideas. Thanks Regards Sylvi

    2. Hi Hilary, I was very interested to see mention of the above. At the corner of Hessle Road and South Boulevard there is a commemorative statue of a fisherman, his right arm raised to the sky. It was indeed a terrible tragedy. If anyone is interested in a more detailed account I can recommend the following websites http://yorkshirepride.portland.co.uk/hull/page7.shtml http://www.tcb.co.uk/gene/gamecock.htm Jean

    1. [ERY] Russian Outrage 1904
    2. Hilary Godber
    3. I have acquired an old book about fishing (the acquisition of old books about fishing being something of a hobby of mine!) which has a chapter about what was known as "The Russian Outrage" of 1904, a famous episode in Hull's history. On October 22, 1904 several steamboats of the Gamecock Fleet, belonging to Messrs. Leyman & Company, which were fishing on the Dogger were fired upon by the Russian Fleet, killing and injuring fishermen on board the trawlers. One trawler, the Crane, was sunk and others were damaged, including the Mino, the Moulmein, the Gull, the Snipe and the Majestic. Following is a list of names included in the book. There are some inconsistencies, which I have noted. If anyone wants further details, please let me know. Henry SMITH (or George Henry SMITH) (skipper of the Crane) William Arthur LEGGETT (boatswain of the Crane) William Richard LEGGETT (3rd hand, Crane) (above 2 may be the same?) William SMITH (Crane) John NIXON (Chief Engineer, Crane) Harry HOGGART (Crane) Arthur REA (Second engineer, Crane) Albert A (or A. E.) ALMOND (trimmer, Crane) John RYDER (or John RYDE) (deckhand, Crane) Walter WHELPTON (Skipper, Mino) Joseph Alfred SMITH (son of William SMITH) Skipper J W White (Mission steamer 'Joseph and Sarah Miles') Dr ANKLESARIA (Mission surgeon) Charles BEER (mate of the Gull) Harry SMIRK (chief engineer, Gull) Edwin COSTELLO (boatswain, Gull) J K GREEN (skipper, Gull) If anyone is interested in the book, which may possibly be available in the library, or through inter library loan, it is called 'North Sea Fishers and Fighters' by Walter Wood, published by Kegan Paul in 1911). 2. Robert and Judith Armstrong
    3. HI, Does anyone know of any resources in Hull about Hull merchant seamen? And possible deaths of merchant seamen? My GGG grandfather Henry THISTLETON b. 1798 was a master mate out of Hull in the 19th Century . I have been unable to find a death entry for him in the GRO index nor in the marine death section. His wife was a widow in 1871 and a wife in 1851 so presumably he died between these dates. Any suggestions welcome. Judith Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Australia

    1. [ERY] 1861 Census Look up
    2. Steve Garton
    3. Yesterday I asked if SKS could have a look for HENNING in Robinson Row, Hull on the 1861 census. I have now discovered that although Charles Henning married from that address in 1859, when his son William Robert HENNING (my gt grandfather) was born in 1860, the address on his birth cert is Princes Street, Hull. So I would appreciate if SKS could see if Charles is listed at this address on the 1861 census, I desperately need to know where he was born. Incidentally I have all of the 1851 indexes for the East Riding and Charles is not listed in any of them. Thanks in anticipation, Steve Garton

    2. Hi Sher, Sounds like a good possibility that the person you are researching would have been in the war. It makes you wonder if a lot of our male ancestry were fighting in various wars at various times. Great Britain had plenty of them! We always blame the poor old Parish Records for losing them. Nice to hear from you. Jean

    2. Hello to all. Whilst searching in vain for various male ancestors whom I knew were alive in the 1901 census, it suddenly dawned on me that they would have been in South Africa fighting in the second Boer War (1899-1902). It might be worth bearing this in mind when searching for ancestors at this time and could quite well account for their absence at the time of the census.I hope this helps. Kind regards Jean garforth

    3. I am hoping that SKS who is on this listing will be able to assist me in tracking down the undermentioned persons in the 1901 census, and who lived in the Hull environs. 1) a Kenneth Arthur WILSON BARKWORTH who was born 1885 and would therefore be circa 15/16 yrs old. I have found his parents but he was not listed with them. 2) a Florence EELES who was born in Sept 1894, and her father was Jeremiah EELES. He may have died by 1901, I am not sure but he was deceased by 1916 when she married. 3) an Eleanor PALMER a daughter of Thomas W PALMER, she was born in 1839 at Cottingham, and died in 1926, a spinster as far as I am aware. Any help on finding these persons would be greatly appreciated. The present Census site does work, I have managed to track down 145 persons out of a possible 170 or so. David
