I am new to the List and have had success on the 1901 in finding my elusive Grandfather Richard Whitfield (couldn't find him on the 1881). He was born 1871 to a Joseph Whitfield and Letitia Whitfield (nee Davies) in Barrow in Furness, Lancs. In 1901 he is living in Sculcoates with his wife Martha (nee Chapman) and children, his immediate neighbour in Alliance Avenue, Sculcoates is his mother Letitia Whitfield who married into another branch of the Whitfields in 1886. In 1901 there are several Whitfield families living in Sculcoates, all appeared to be in the Slater business. I have spent three years researching Whitfields with success and wonder if there is someone on the List also looking at these three surnames WHITFIELD, CHAPMAN, DAVIES ? I would love to hear from you and can share quite a lot of information on Whitfield. Kind regards to all on the List, Pauline Thomas (nee Whitfield) in Dubai
Hi Everyone, I am trying to find the parents of John METCALF, born at Keyingham in about 1788, and later resident at Everthorpe/North Cave. Before I book a day at Beverley to search in the Archives, does anyone have any information which might help or even save me the trip? Many thanks, Graham _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com
Dear Listers My GGGrandmother was Emily TAYLOR born c1852 in Arnold, Yorkshire. According to the family bible she married George DOBSON, born in Little Coates, Linconshire on the 9th December 1869. Unfortunately the bible doesnt say which church. I am guessing that it would most likely have been the brides parish, because according to the 1881 census their son William, was also born there on18 March 1871. Can some kind soul with local knowledge of Arnold, Yorkshire maybe advise me which church it would most likely have been? Does anyone have easy access to this churches records?? Finally, is there anyone else with TAYLOR ancestors from Arnold, Yorkshire. Thanks so much for bearing with me Kim

I would be obliged if a member of this listing who has access to the 1861 census for the East Riding could possibly look for the undermentioned persons: 1) an Edward S WILSON, who was a solicitor and aged circa 42 along with his wife Frances M WILSON. They had just had a son called Ernest, who was born in February of 1861. They had other children who were living at that time in the Family home in Melton, but the Parents named above are not shown. 2) on a slightly different tack does anyone have a copy of the 1851 Census for Hull under the reference HO107/2362/F177 and does it show a Frances M BROMBY living at "The Vicarage, Holy Trinity Church" as this reference has been scribbled down but I'm not too sure about it. Kind Regards David
Hello all, As Colin Hinson is a very busy person, not only having a full time job, but keeping on top of the Genuki Yorkshire pages - a most valuable tool for us all - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/index.html and he is very backward at blowing his own trumpet ......I am here to blow it for him <vbg> Perhaps some listers would be interested to know that Colin has produced several Yorkshire CDs which are available now from Brenda Green at www.yorkshireancestors.com - click on the 'Shop' page - alongside many CD reproductions of Brenda's extensive Yorkshire book collection. Incidentally, I overheard a conversation last week at Scarborough Family History Fair - one researcher was considering the purchase of about 4 or 5 CDs, saying it was rather a lot of money (GBP50) in one go, when her friend said "It's only the price of a night out - and only think how much more pleasure it will give you!" ......So true! On a recent entry from "Baines's Directory of 1823, for Heslington, I found my John Skelton listed under occupations as day school and parish clerk. Does anyone know if this directory contains other information about individuals? In a baptismal entry for 1800, for Heslington, it quotes maternal grandfathers residence as Skeldergate. I have not been able to trace this as a town/village and would appreciate advice on this. Life is not that simple. I was merely pointing out that in some cases it is a real possibility and worth bearing in mind when we are fruitlessly searching. As you probably are aware, the Boer War was enthusiastically supported by the British populace and many men volunteered to fight. In fact, it was probably the first "jingoistic" war. As far as I am aware there is no comprehensive list for soldiers serving in the Boer War. I think you would only be able to trace someone if you knew which regiment they were serving in which is not always possible. Like yourself,if anyone does know of a list I should be most interested. This evening whilst deleting spurious messages purporting to come from Rootsweb, I accidentally deleted messages that were innocent. I know there was one message from a lister asking for further details of one of the fishermen on my recently posted losses list. Unfortunately, I have no additional information beyond the details on the list, but I would have answered the enquiry personally if I could, so I hope the person that sent the query will see this and understand my lack of response. Most of Genuki is hosted on the Manchester university server ("Irwell"), and it has suffered a problem with one of the CPU boards (Central Processing Unit). Hi Jean and everyone Is there anywhere where Boer War soldiers may be listed? I accept that some of these missing young men could have been there, but it seems rather an easy solution to *so many* missing relatives! I would be grateful for any suggestions of where to look to confirm they were fighting in the Boer War... Hi, I am new to the list and I am trying to trace my great grandmother, Jane Calvert who was born around 1835 (ie she was 79 at her death in January 1915). On the 1881 census, by which time she is married to a George Dickinson and living in Saltaire, she listed her place of birth as Myton on Swale, but searches of the registers brought no results. On the 1901 census she has stated her place of birth as Easingwold, and I wondered whether anyone was researching a Calvert family from that area. Alternatively, can anyone tell me where I might locate the Easingwold registers. Jane from Otley.
