Hi Carol It would probably be the Hull Daily Mail at that time. Try their webiste www.thisishull.co.uk. The local studies library at Hull keeps copies of the HDM on microfilm going way back. Phone them on 01482 210077. Hi List, I am hoping SKS will be able to check the 1851 census and find MARGARET CATHERINE DORMER. She is my Great Grandmother. b 15/5/1840, Hull. I think her father was John Henry Dormer, mother Helen ? She arrived in Australia 1858. I don't have anything on her in England. Thanks, Eunice --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Please can somebody with local knowledge please give me some advice about how to get hold of an obituary for the Hull area? I am trying to trace an immediate ancestor who died as recently as 1963. It seems as though it is easier to find out about people who died in the 19th century than it is to find details of their descendants! I have a death certificate now but would like to get hold of any obituaries in the local press. There does not seem to be any way of doing this online (I don't live locally, so the internet would be my solution of choice!) but if anybody else knows differently, I'd love to hear from you! Alternatively, is there a newspaper which offers a service and could send me a photocopy? Which newspapers were around in the early 1960's? If all else fails and I have to travel to Hull for the information, where would be the place to go to look this up? Does the library hold newspapers or would the local records office be the best place? Thanks in advance, Carol Weston researching MEDD, DONNISON, WINN, BELSHAW in Yorkshire

Thanks a lot Freda, I will get onto Browns ASAP. Richard
Hi Richard I found the book 'The East Yorkshire Village Book' at Brown's in George Street. Hull on my last visit there a few weeks ago. They had a number of them available then. The book is part of a series called 'The Villages of Britain'. They have been compiled by the Federation of Women's Institutes. I found this book very informative and not just from a Family History point of view but also useful as a guide book, and will certainly refer to it on my next visit to the Yorkshire Region. I have to-day ordered a copy in the same series on Lincolnshire. I was told that the original series is now unavailable but a new edition was issued in September which now includes some colour photographs. I am eagerly awating my copy and just hope that it is as comprehensive and informative as the East Yorkshire area. I know that a lot of Yorkshire folk are researching family in other parts of the Country, so am listing the books available in the series. Hope this isn't too much off subject!!! Avon Bedfordshire Berkshire Buckinghamshire Cambridgeshire Cheshire Cleveland Cornwall Cumbria Derbyshire Devon Dorset Essex Gloucestershire Hampshire Herefordshire Hertfordshire Kent Lancashire Leicester&Rutland Lincolnshire Middlesex Norfolk Northamptionshire Nottinghamshire Oxfordshire Powys Montgomeryshire Shropshire Somerset Staffordshire Suffolk Surrey East Sussex Warwickshire West Midlands Wiltshire Worcestershire North Yorkshire South & West Yorkshire. Phew!!!!! I think I should just have said 'everwhere'. Freda Good Malvern
Apoligies to all; on its own my message was misleading. I should have included a message from another list, but it appears to have been omitted. For anyone that doesn't know the LDS web site (www.familysearch.org) now gives free on-line access to the 1881 British Census, as well as the USA and Canadian census. Sorry for the confusion. Peter
I recently purchased in Hedon near Hull two memory cards; Maria Hildyard of Louth died 21 Jun 1866 aged 64 and Robert Turner of Caistor died 23 December 1890 aged 77. Anyone researching these names can have them. Tony
Freda There could be a number of us out here who would like to get hold of a copy of this book. Could you tell us how? Richard Dawson
If it is not commonly known you may be interested in the message I recieved. You may wish to give it a try. Peter.
Many thanks to Carol, Peter, Peter, Nick, David and Sheila for their help. I now have Esther CHARD and two daughters, now to find the boys ! Two possible burial grounds were mentioned, Hull City Cemetery on Heddon Road and Western General in Springbank for Esther ( died 1916 ) and her husband William ( died 1890 ) . I am on the prowl for MI's, does anyone know if these graveyards have been 'done' ? Regards Peter in Auckland NZ.
Hello Pete, Sorry I magnified it and it is number 38 not 37, should have realised it went 38,36,34, etc (duh) and it is Esther now you have mentioned her it is easy to make out. The EYFHS are planning on doing the big cemeteries , they may be working on them at the moment, see www. EYFHS.org.uk they have a list of MI books. Could SKS please have a look at the 1891 and see who was living at 14 Woodhouse Street and 27 Woodhouse Street, Driffield, Hull. Hopefully it will be my lot, the CHARD's. Also, which cemetery is the probable burial place for any one dying in Woodhouse Street, I would like to check on possible MI's for my GGparents. Cheers, Peter in Auckland NZ.
Have just discovered another name for my tree, Hannah LEVI who on the 1881 census was living at 3 Handleys Place, Sculcoates. If this name connects, I would love to hear from you. Tim ask "Does anyone know which records office holds Hull BMD records?" Hi Tim, The Hull BMD records are held at 'The Registry Office' which is situated at the Municipal Offices in George Street. The address for this is - Hull Register Office Municipal Offices, 181-191 George Street, Kingston-Upon-Hull, HU1 3BY UK Phone number for general enquiries is - +44 1482 615401. If you are looking for an event then try the on-line indexes that they are creating at http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/ from the local indexes. They currently only cover births and marriages and are not yet complete but provide a good starting point for a search. If you require a certificate for one of the entries then you can printout the appropriate form from there containing all the details, including the local reference number. This saves time and ensures you get the right certificate back. Hope this is of use. Freda Good ask "I have found photographs of the churches at Howden and Eastrington on the Web. Does anyone have any other suggestions for finding photographs." Freda The photographs of the churches for most of the places you mentioned have been placed on the Yorkshire pages of GENUKI by Colin Hinson. The site is located at - http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ You then look for the appropriate parish page. Start by picking either "Contents" or "Yorkshire Towns & Parishes" from the top then looking down for the appropriate entry. This is a great resource to start locating things relating to places in Yorkshire and covers the whole of the Yorkshire area not just the East Riding. Happy hunting Keith D. _________________________________________________________________ Choose an Internet access plan right for you -- try MSN! http://resourcecenter.msn.com/access/plans/default.asp
Hi Freda, I have photographs of the churches/chapels in all the places you mention with the exception of Hook on the Genuki Yorkshire site. I'm happy for you to use these photographs so long as you obey the conditions of use (there's a link to the conditions of use page on each of the pages on the site.)
