Jackie A malster was, and still is, a man who worked in a malt kiln. That is a place where barley is converted to malt for the making of beer, and other things. My maternal grandfather worked as a malster during the season and was a 'ag-lab' the rest of the year. Richard
What an interesting surprise I got when browsing through the Guisborough Bookshop on Saturday. Not only is this one of the very best bookshops I have seen for local and family history, but it had on display this new book by our old friend Beryl Bass. I'm not sure if Beryl is still subscribed to this list, but we all remember Beryl from Yorksgen 2000, and somewhere along the line I missed the fact that she was publishing this Index. (Beryl can be contacted at buttercup@dccnet.com It is a unique index to the well known book 'The history of Cleveland' by Rev John Graves, who turns out to be Beryl's 3 x great grandfather. Priced at £9.99 it gives a wealth of information. It lists all the clergy of the Langbargh Wapentake, together with 122 large pages of entries. To give you an idea, here is one for Elizabeth Agar: AGAR page 288 Richard and Matthew AGAR owned the cell and lands adjoining Coatbank Lodge, Parish of Egton and of course there had to be one for Roy: STOCKDALE page 260 George Stockdale 1598 Rector of Kildale It is not just a listing though, for some names like WHARTON there is comprehensive information. Well recommended and I think they are now in short supply so I would recommend a quick email to books@guisboroughbookshop.com Best wishes Glenys in the Yorkshire Dales www.bishopdale.demon.co.uk Web site for the Upper Dales Family History Group Seeking CUMPSTONs everywhere

Thanks to everyone who replied iro the above records. I'll have to order the films and see what they say. I have read that the information is not necessarily 100% accurate. One point of interest I found in the IGI was my Hare/Hair grgrgrandparents had five separately born children all christened on the same date in1833. Must have been a block booking. Peter (Newcastle upon Tyne, England)
Hi Peter The IGI is a secondary source (and prone to errors) it should only be used as a research guide, you should always consult the original PR's and/or BT's, and yes (depending on date) they often give more information than the IGI. Maria
I am looking for information on the family of Richard and Anne(West) Dale. They had 4 children: Mary, Joseph(b 1813), Elizabeth(b 1816), and David(b1818). Elizabeth and David were born in North Newbald. The family emigrated to Canada abt 1820. I have been unable to find a marriage record or the Chr of either Mary or Joseph in the IGI. Any assistance would be most appreciated.
I have accessed the LDS IGI records online and found many christening details of relatives. These print-outs have given name, christening detail, and parents name(s). So far, however, I have not visited the local resource centre to lookup the details on film. Does the film give more information? Peter
Hi Folks, I am pleased to announce the release of another CD rom to add to my collection of Yorkshire related CDs. The new CD rom contains "The History and Antiquities of the Seigniory of Holderness" by George Poulson Esquire. These books were originally intended to be published by Rev. William Dade (of the Dade Registers), however he died before accomplishing this. George Poulson took up the challenge and completed this some 50 to 60 years later. There is a great deal of information about each of the parishes in Holderness, including pedigrees, lists of incumbents etc. etc. In all, over 1,100 pages including about 40 plates and numerous wood-cuts. Please note that whilst these books cover Drypool, Marfleet, Sutton on Hull and Sunk Island, it does not cover Kingston on Hull (Hull). For more details, please see me CD rom website.
