    1. [ERY] Family of Richard and Anne Dale early 1800's
    2. I am looking for information on the family of Richard and Anne(West) Dale. Anne was born about 1786 and had a brother William. They had 4 children: Mary, Joseph(b 1813), Elizabeth(b 1816), and David(b1818). Elizabeth and David were born in North Newbald. The family emigrated to Canada abt 1820. I have been unable to find a marriage record or the Chr of either Mary or Joseph in the IGI. Any assistance would be most appreciated.

    1. Re: [ERY] Storm of 1880
    2. Glenys Marriott
    3. Dear David Good to get your message, sorry not to have replied earlier. You have just raised my favourite non-human research topic - the ship Saffron and the storm on the night of 28th October 1880. My 3 x grandfather Watson CUMPSTON was supposedly the captain of the Saffron that night, when the ship knocked down Withernsea Pier. Initially I heard from a very distant cousin on this list that we were related, and that her side of the family had a painting of the Saffron, together with the oral history involving my CUMPSTON. Next, I received wonderful information about the Saffron from the Mariners-L@rootsweb.com mailing list. There is a contributor there gprovost@webruler.com who is a mine of information about ships and he sent me these details. I suggest you subscribe for a while to see what info he can give you. SAFFRON (1881) Call sign: MTKC Official Number: 54850 Master: J. Morrison Rigging: Snow; sheathed in felt and yellow metal in 1875 Tonnage: 276 tons Dimensions: 107 feet long, 26.1 foot beam and holds 15.7 feet deep Construction: 1866, Denniston in Sunderland; some repairs in 1875 Owners: T. W. Ring Port of registry: Sunderland Next, on this list, Linda Ferguson sent me the following from "A history of Withernsea & other parishes in S. Holderness". "In 1875, a Company known as the Withernsea Improvement Company erected an ornamental iron pier, a quarter of a mile in length, and a concrete sea wall. The pier had but a short existence, as on October 28th, 1880, a coal-laden barge, "the Saffron", was driven through it, and carried away about two hundred feet. This damage was repaired, but in a violent gale on March 25th, 1882, the end of the pier was carried away, and all that now remains are a couple of upright columns and the entrance towers. The sea wall, however, is still in a good state of preservation." MILES, Geo. T.J. & RICHARDSON , William"A history of Withernsea...", Hull: A. Brown & Sons, 1911, p.33 I have a poor photocopy of The Hull News dated 30th October 1880, which start 'Storms and Floods, fearful gale in the North Sea. Shipwrecks and loss of life. Withernsea Pier carried away. Exciting scenes on the coast. Serious inundations.' 'A resident of Withernsea stated that she counted 190 sail of ships pass that place on Thursday afternoon, and none of these vessels, it is thought, would be successful in getting round Flamborough Head'.......There is then a very long narrative by the 'captain of the Saffron' who is unnamed (damn damn damn!) . The article goes on to mention dozens of ships who foundered that night (50 in all), where they had some early evidence of what had happened to them. It goes on to say 'We may state that a life-buoy was washed ashore yesterday afternoon a little to the north of Withernsea, marked ''Jabez, Colchester". On references to the Registrar of Shipping we find that the Jabez of Colchester is a barge of 71 tons, owned by Robert Shead of Hythe". It does not mention more about the ship in that edition though. You might like to look at newspapers throughout the following week, although I regret I don't have them, and Hull is a long journey away or I would go and have a look for you. I am happy to send you what I have, together with a copy of the painting on a postcard of the Saffron having knocked down the pier, if you would let me know your address. If anyone has further information on the Saffron and my CUMPSTON I should be delighted to hear from you! 1. [ERY] A serial bigamist?? Help!!
    2. Diane Ellerton
    3. I'm working on a puzzle which has me stumped. To be VERY brief, I cannot find a death for a wife, yet I find two subsequent marriages of someone of the same name, same place, right time frame. As to the details - where I cannot be quite so brief, I fear: 1 Frederic Thomas ELLERTON married Sarah ACEY in the first quarter of 1867 in Sculcoates Register Office - per Yorkshire BMD. 2 They had two children, born in 1867 and 1869. 3 On the 1871 census, Frederic is listed as a "widower." 4 He remarried in the third quarter of 1872, possibly somewhat hastily. 5 I have looked at the GRO indexes - and also on the FreeBMD and Yorkshire BMD web sites, which I realise are not complete yet - and can find no death for Sarah ELLERTON. The name seems not terribly common, as so far on the two aforementioned web sites, I can find no reference to her birth (although admittedly, I have no date for it). 6 Yet in 1870 and 1874, there are marriages of a "Sarah ACEY", again in the Sculcoates Register Office. 7 Was Frederic really a widower in 1871, or did his wife leave him? Could he have told the census enumerator he was a widower to avoid having to explain the scandal of a wife who left him? 8 Order the certificates, I can hear you saying. . .but my purse is saying "ouch"! as my husband complains about what an expensive hobby this is getting to be. I would need to order one certificate for each of Sarah's 3 marriages, plus Frederic's hasty marriage and the hasty child, to clear up matters, and I have already spent a small fortune on certificates concerning this huge family. Any suggestions or solutions?? Diane

    1. [ERY] Microfilms
    2. Neil McCarthy
    3. Christmas greetings... A question that someone may be able to help me with. I want to do some research on the census records for Hull. I have checked out the online 1881 and 1901 records so now want to access the other ones starting with the 1891. I am new to this but I gather that one way is to order the appropriate microfilms via my local Latter Day Saints Family History Centre. When I check the Family History Library Catalogue on www.familysearch.org and look for the film number I see that there is more than 1 film for each Hull census. In fact there are 12 separate films for 1891 and 10 of those are labelled the same - Myton Sub District. So, my trouble is that I can't seem to identify which film I would want or, at least which are more or less likely to contain my ancestors so I could order film progressively. There is a charge for ordering each film via the FHC so I was wondering if I've got this right - it may just be the "way it is". Hope you get my drift and this is an OK question. Any comment or suggestions would be great. Neil Lower Hutt New Zealand

    3. Neil asked about which film to order so that he could look up his families in the 1891 Census for Hull. There is a surname index for the 1891 for the Hull area that is available on microfiche from Lincolnshire FHS. I can look up some surnames for him (or anyone else wanting similar info) and give the refs so that he will know which piece numbers to order. Don't all rush ------ !!! I gathered from said censuses that there were several such establishments in the same street. I don't think the street exists today, so can anyone tell me where it was, bearing in mind that although I was born in Hull I left at the age of 3. She was a widow in 1841 but married again the following year. However this did not deter her from continuing her business, her 2nd husband was a mariner as was her 1st. Barbara
