    3. Has anyone on the list come across a Jeweller/Watch Repair business that was run by Herbert Ransom from somewhere around 1895, probably based around 41 Waterloo St, Sculcoates? My main interest is whether the business survived any great distance into the 20th Century, so any sightings would be of enormous interest. Thanks, and best wishes Tim Linnell

    3. Hi: I was hoping someone can help me. I finally went to the library and found a book called "Discovering your English Ancestors" by Paul Milner and Linda Jonas. It has some good advice which I should have read before I started my search. Anyway, it says that some names are interchangeable and some have nicknames and, that, "ANN, HANNAH, AND NANCY are variations on the same name. My great great grandmother is listed as Hannah on her son's marriage record. No last name. The last name I am researching is "SPECK". The book also says to search Passenger and Immigration Lists Indexes and that there is a a CD 354 by William Filby and Mary Meyer called PASSENGER AND IMMIGRATION LISTS INDEX 1538-1940. If anyone has this CD, could they look up George Speck and Hannah Speck (but it could also be Ann Speck or Nancy Speck) coming to Canada sometime before 1852, or even 1852. My great grandfather George Travis Speck was born in Canada in 1852. One census says 1855. I really would appreciate it. Thank you. Gerri "the love you take is equal to the love you make"

    1. [ERY] BELK Flamborough
    2. Conrad Plowman
    3. Anne - Perhaps the following explanation might help, from: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Books/FolkTalk/B.html. "Brant, Brat, adj. C. Steep; generally applied to a hill side or road up a steep hill, such as the road down to the North Landing at Flamborough. The word brat, which is the Danish form, is still retained in place-names, e.g. Nunburnbolme Brat, which is a very steep wooded hillside. The word also is used with a secondary meaning, in the sense of pompous, or stiff in manner. Dan. Brat (steep) ; Swedish Brant (steep). Ex.Aye! but it's a bit brant; it's t' rooad t' bait lasses gans ti gether flithers." Conrad I have the birthplace of an ancestor in the 1861 census for Flambro' which looks like Belk. His wife and children were all born in Swine. Has anyone any idea what Belk could be please? I can't find it on a map or on the GenUKI list of places in Yorkshire. There is a Balk in West Yorkshire but this seems unlikely. Regards Anne

    1. [ERY] Death Cert
    2. PETER ATKINSON
    3. My grgrandmothers death cert of 1902 shows the informant as J.Youll, daughter, present at death, Branch Arms,Grimsby Lane,Hull. I have been unable to find any trace of the name Youll, a daughter, or the Branch Arms. If the surname was spoken in a Yorkshire accent what perhaps could be an alternative spelling. It could be the informant lied and gave false details, as my grgrandfather in the 1901 census was shown as having a stroke. Could therefore this person gain anything as my grandfather and grandmother still lived in Hull. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Peter (Newcastle upon Tyne)
