No, it was certainly possible then (as now) for girls to marry at 16, and it's also quite common to find an incorrect age on a marriage certificate. But bear in mind that the IGI entry is for a baptism, not a birth, so Mary could have been born some time earlier. You should be able to check this in the GRO indexes, or the national or Yorkshire BMD websites. You may not be able to answer this yet, but I'd be interested to hear if your SCREETON line goes back to the Nottingham area. This name and variants (SCRATON/SCREATON etc) appear in my wife's line, and they are possibly all connected. (Confusingly the IGI lists SCRATON separately from the others, but it didn't seem to have a Mary that fitted anyway.) Arthur Kennedy

    1. [ERY] The Beverley Reform Chapel 1856
    2. Paul Roberts
    3. Dear List Members, I have recently come across a copy of a printed booklet containing a poem called "Lines on the Erection of The Reform Chapel, Beverley A.D. 1856", written by Joshua Roberts (1806-1884). Joashua, an ancestor of mine, was a Methodist lay preacher. The poem is certainly not a great work, but it does have an historical interest, especially as it mentions a number of people connected to the chapel. Their names are: BAINBRIDGE, BRAIMBRIDGE,CARLEE,DIAL,DIXON,GRAINGER,LAWTY,LOFT,MOODY,MUSGRAVE,OSGERBY,PAPE,SAWNEY,STAFFORD,VERITY and WELBOURNE. If anyone is searching for these names and would like to read the poem I will gladly send them a copy off-list. Meanwhile, if anyone has any information whatsoever about Joshua ROBERTS, who had been born in North Somercotes, Lincolnshire in 1806, I would be more than grateful to receive it. With all best wishes Paul Roberts

    3. Hello, I am sure that is right, too. I suppose the principal was the same - economy. People who were not poor could better afford to take a working day off. I couldn't remember where I had read about clergymen waiving their fee on Christmas Day, so I did a "Google" search, and found a thread of messages on the subject, in the archives of the Midmarch Rootsweb list (which wasn't where I saw it originally, as I have never been a subscriber to that list). Anyway, one such message stated: "I had it from the horses mouth. My Dad told me that he was married on Christmas Day, 1919 because they were very poor and the minister did not charge for Christmas Day weddings." 3. True. . . .Nor that they refer to multiple births!! I always have this problem with a fellow family historian, who insists that "twins run in the family". The mother of the so-called "twins" had 6 illegitimate children and 4 of those were baptised in two lots, so he assumes they were twins. I think she just wasn't very eager to get to the church to show off her most recent "mistakes"! I think the first one baptised was actually closer to 4 years old at the time of baptism, if his age at death is anything to go by (as it probably is not, but there's another can of worms. . .).
