All, I have the Yorks 1891 census, but would appreciate help from anyone else who has access to it. I sent a post in the other day about finding my SNEE family in the 1901 Census. As a result of finding them I searched for their address in 1891, and found them next door! The address was 21 Caroline St, Sculcoates, Hull. Living there were John & Mary Snee and their numerous children. Also there in 1891, but not 1901, was her father, William. I was wondering if anyone could read his surname and his place of birth. I believe his occupation was a 'lath render' and I think it says he was from Essex. The sheet I am looking at is R12-3926 folio 103, page 29. This entry is at the top of the page. All help would be greatly appreciated, especially as this is the first time I have come across her father. Rob
Hi all, I have a Parish mentioned in a marriage entry that looks like Pamst*k or Pemst*k the marriage took place in Howden. Any clues welcome Marg
Hello listers, from warm and sunny Melbourne Australia. Hello, As far as I can tell, Howden itself is a parish (as opposed to a larger village or a town or city in which there are several parishes). Are you sure that the word isn't "Parish" (as in the phrase "the Parish of Howden"?) Just a thought - I may well be completely wrong! I am trying to find records for the period above to help me break down my HESSELL brickwall. My 5 x Great Grandfather Gregory HES(S)EL(L)/HES(S)LE was shown in the Bubwith Parish Register as a Farmer of Gribthorpe in 1735 and a Farmer of Harlthorpe from 1737 thereafter. I have not been able to locate his Parish of origin. I realise I may have to continue an ever widening search of Parishes. However, I am trying to narrow down the search to places where the surname is located in this period. I am aware of the Hearth Tax - can anyone give an indication of how much there is, any experience of using it, any indexes and location of records. Also, are there any other types of records that would prove useful to me that would cover this period. Thanks Andy Simpson Middlesbrough
Thanks a lot to everyone who has given me the griffin on Hull Grammar School. I have not yet chedked any of the sites yet but it is all recorded. I don't know why you could not get me over the weekend Pat but thanks a lot anyway. Dad would be amazed if he could come back and see all this. Richard Dawson born Thwing, now in Charmouth

Hi Rob, Re Butler and the 1901 census Out of one family with six brothers and sisters living at different addresses three were correctly named but of the others one was Batter, one who was still living with the mother was Butter as was the mother, and the third was named Buster. Makes things a tad difficult at times. Hello John I think you have misunderstood the query made by Joan and the answer given by myself. The Beverley Archives that you mention are not part of the Registrar's Office. The Beverley Archives hold things like Parish Registers, etc. People make an appointment to do their own research. The Registrar's Office is where one can obtain copies of marriage, death and birth certificates. The Beverley Registrar's Office moved last summer due to the fact that they were now the holder of the other areas such as Pocklington and Bridlington and needed more space. Joan's query was in regards to the Registrar's Office, not the Archives. Janet ----- Original Message ----- From: "John R. All, For those of you struggling to find families in the 1901 Census on-line (as I still am) I have recently managed to crack two of them and I thought I would share them with you. The first was an East Yorks family with the surname SNEE. Should have been dead easy, I thought. With 11 kids I knew they had to be there. I tried all combinations: SNEE, SMEE, SN*, SM*. Eventually I got there by searching for all women born c1857 called Mary, born in Grimsby. I found her under the name SULL. When handwritten, however, I could see how a transcriber had got it wrong. The second was a family by the name of Owen. I eventually found two Owen children with the same family ID number, with ages and birthplaces that matched mine in the tree. By being able to link them, I turned up the correct page to find Dad had died and Mom had remarried, with the name Wilkinson, hence my difficulty. So, to all of you struggling, it can be done. There are many reasons for failure. However, that does not help as to why I cannot find James Butler in Birmingham. I shall have to resort to the fiche, unless someone has an idea for me. Rob

Hi listers, To get a list of all registrars try this, www.statistics.gov.uk-registration-default You need to look at the second choice along and then choose certificates. Zoom down to the bttom of the page for the list of registration districts. I hope that I have remembered this correctly but you can explore anyway! Billie, Berks.
I totally messed up the Hull Local Studies Library contact in my recent reply re Hull Schools. The correct contact for the Local Studies Library is local.studies@hullcc.gov.uk which of course is an e mail address and not an URL or not a URL as some would claim as being correct. Sorry about that Peter B
Dear Listers, A friend is just starting to research his SIMPKIN family. His beginning information gives grandparents James and Elizabeth SIMPKIN who lived on a farm ("Buckton House") near Buckton. They raised and showed heavy horses such as Clydesdales. Children - born beginning 1880s - Herbert, Arthur, Harry b. 1890, Sydney, James and Nellie. I've had a look at the 1881 and 1901 census records but, with my limited information, cannot pick out the family with any certainty. Just wondering if a SIMPKIN researcher might recognize this family. Thank you!! Joan NS, Canada
Hi Joan I do not believe you would be able to order anything from the Regristrar in Bridlington. We have done that in the past ourselves. However, we were in East Yorkshire last summer in July and went to Pocklington, a different district to get a certificate only to be told that they were centralizing the offices as of Monday. That included Bridlington and everything would now come out of Beverley. I am not sure if Beverley has an email address as we were there when it first opened. Make sure you get the correct address of Beverley as they moved offices to accommodate the extra records. The old address may yet still appear on some web sites. I will try and check and see if I come up with the correct address for you. Dear Listers, I'm new to the list, helping a friend start his SIMPKIN family history by ordering his father's 1890 birth certificate. Does the Bridlington Registrar's office have an email address so I can confirm that they hold this particular birth registration before writing? (Would prefer to order there rather than Southport.) Any help would be very welcome - thank you! Joan Nova Scotia, Canada
