    3. Hi Richard There are two reasons why this is so. Firstly the registration district of Sculcoates ie BMD, Census records, covered much of what today is Hull and all the surrounding area. Secondly the parish of Sculcoates which is now completely absorbed in Hull was in the 19th century the place where large numbers of migrants from all over EY, Lincolnshire etc moved to for employment. Many of them subsequently moved elsewhere. We have a saying here that if you have lost someone the best place to start looking is Sculcoates as it seems that just about everyone lived there at sometime even if only for a short while Best wishes Peter B ----- Original Message ----- From: <RichardDeedee@aol.com> To: <ENG-EAST-YORKS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: 01 March 2003 19:14 Subject: [ERY] Sculcoates > David Lamb and Joseph Miller correctly interpreted my query about Sculcoates. > I'm not interestred in the place as such but just why does it figure so > prominently in the queries in the mailings in this list. 3. Hi, I think I'm the one you're referring to, and thanks for keeping me in mind. Is it by any chance Gary Woodforth you're thinking of? I know he's in Australia and I've been in touch with him and exchanged info. However, the branch that is giving me the problems is further down from where his clan takes off, so I would be delighted to hear of anyone else more closely related, i.e., from when the family left Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire and moved to Hessle - albeit briefly. Judging from some photos we have, I'm sure there were younger boys, possibly also born in Hessle after the 1881 census. Hope springs eternal! 3. Hi Pauline, I downloaded copies of the actual cenus entries in their original form. So, there tends to be a least another 3 or 4 families at addresses on the same sheet. I must say, I now understand why the people who transcribed the censuses made mistakes! I have had to get the old magnifying glass out a few times. Kind regards. Jean Garforth

    3. Hello David, To explain, the information about Sculcoates which I mentioned was available, will also explain why Sculcoates covers such a wide area, re: parish records etc. and the articles are so good that I could not possibly measure up! Boudicca? My absolute herione! Mind you, I very much doubt that the people of Colchester share my views. Kind regards. Jean Garforth

    2. David Lamb and Joseph Miller correctly interpreted my query about Sculcoates. I'm not interestred in the place as such but just why does it figure so prominently in the queries in the mailings in this list. I guess that it just covers a big area and has a big population. My folks lived in Rise for 100 years and I was born in Thwing, neither of which is home to more than a few hundred people. Richard

    3. Hello, I may be completely wrong here, but when I read Richard's message, I took it that he was asking why Sculcoates seems (in his view) to feature so proficiently in messages to this list (ENG-EAST-YORKS). He didn't seem to be asking for information about Sculcoates itself. Incidentally (Jean), as someone born and brought up in Colchester, I couldn't help noticing the reference to Boudicca in your email address! 1. [ERY] Research visit to London from Manchester
    2. Mary Pendlebury
    3. Hi Listers I am organising a Research Visit to London from Oldham/Manchester just after Easter. (22nd to 24th April) This is an annual event for the Oldham & District Branch of the Manchester & Lancs FHS. We travel down on Tuesday morning and come back on Friday night. Accommodation is at a University Hall of Residence in Bloomsbury, convenient for lots of research facilities. The cost is £95 per person for 3 nights B & B and return coach travel. There are still some places available as we have had some cancellations due to hospital appointments and operations being scheduled! It occurred to me that there might be members of this list who live in the Manchester area who would like to join us on this visit. You do not have to be a member of our Society to come with us, some travellers bring non-researchers with them as well. If anyone is interested please email me off-list and I will send further details and answer any queries. Regards Mary Pendlebury Oldham, Lancashire
