    1. [ERY] 1861 Census Lookup - Market Weighton
    2. Moira Forde
    3. Is there anybody who would be willing and able to look at the 1861 census for Market Weighton for my CONNELL /O'CONNELL family? I would be *SO* grateful, as I have no access to the 1861 census near to me. I am looking for: William Connell (possibly O'Connell), his wife Rachel and their children (at that time) William Henry aged about 5, Tom aged about 3 and Jonathan Pallister Connell aged about 1. There may have been other children I don't know about. Jonathan was christened/baptised in the Parish Church of Market Weighton, on 13 January 1860, so I am hoping the family were still there in 1861. best wishes, Moira Christchurch, Dorset Researching FORD and O'CONNELL/CONNELL, Beverley and Driffield, Yorks; WHITE in Horncastle, Lincs.

    3. What is the occupation, "Grassman"? I find a man described as "labourer" for all of the births of his children, but at the burial of a man with the same name, the register shows "grassman and labourer" while the Bishop transcripts shows only "Grassman". He was aged about 30 at the birth of his last child and the burial occurred 32 years later. These events occurred in Hutton Cranswick, during the 18th century. -- Glen Johnson Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada <dancer@vimy.v-net.org>

    3. --=======1AF03B52======= Content-Type: text/plain; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-2906298C; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Hi all, Thanks to the kindness of those who responded to my request for a lookup of the 1841 census for Driffield, I now have another ggg-aunt: Martha JOHNSON. In addition I now know that William must already have died. By 1851 the JOHNSON family had moved back to Hull, but Martha, then 18, was not living at home on census day. However, in the index to the 1851 census HO 107/2362 Holy Trinity Hull, there is an entry: Martha JOHNSON (18) Hull 490v I suspect that this must be my Martha, and am hoping that SKS who is looking at (or has access to) the above 1851 census document would be so good as to look at the record of folio 490v and give me the details on her occupation and household in which she was living. 1. [ERY] Brixham Strays
    2. Regarding Martin Cross's Yorkshire Brixham strays; a number of Brixham trawlers used to base themselves in Scarborough for the summer holiday season. If shorthanded they would obviously sign on local men and it could be that some of these sailed round to Brixham at the end of the season. Some of these boats may have based themselves on Hull. It was a Scarborough based Brixham trawler that discovered the 'Silver Pits' , an extremely rich fishing area. They were caught out in a storm with their nets down and when they finally managed to haul them up they found some sole( a very agile fish) still in the remains of the torn net. They figured that they must have dragged over a very rich ground and worked ouit where they had drifted over. Richard Dawson ex Thwing, ex Bridlington now Charmouth Dorset

    3. Hello: Just caught a "snip" of your request in somebody's reply - so not sure where you have been looking for your Brittains. At a fairly early date, there were Brittains here in Ontario Canada, in the former county of Durham at both Bowmanville and Port Hope. They were primarily merchants. If you require further info as to their names, occupations, etc. please let me know. Hope this helps you, or anyone else who has "lost" a Brittain. Sher at Ontario

But be aware that my Goodworth pages have a lot of speculation on them built up from a number of sources. I have come across two or three possible Goodworth-Brittain marriages but I have no idea whether the different Brittains in these marriages are related in any way. Peter Jamieson
