This is a difficult area as these two definitions could apply to those who are simply deaf with speech difficulties. These deaf people cannot in any way be described by either of the two definitions. Unfortunately when people meet deaf people they think they have no intelligence whatsoever. There are deaf people around who have managed to get a good education and even obtain a PhD but are still treated as of low intelligence. Victor

    3. Hi Kathy I believe as late as the 1930s these were commonly used medical definitions in hospitals. In 1974 Mencap published a book "Tongue Tied" by John Joseph Deacon. Following a severe fall as an infant and the death of his mother, his father had to place him in an institution. He was unable to communicate until years later he met another man who could understand him. This was realted to another man who typed the story. Horizon produced a superb film, called I believe "Joey" about his life and at one stage he was being examined by doctors. One said, "Wel he's not an idiot and he's not an imbecile so he must be a cretin" Otherwise he wouldn't be there. (I am not sure exactly which condition was agreed. The book is till available from Amazon but I suspect the Horizon problem has long gone. This programme had a profound effect on me as I worked in adult education and provided courses in a Cheshire Home and later in hospitals for people with learning disabilities. I am very vocal myself and this helped me to see that people I could not understand were not to be seen as incapable. Here are two definitions: Idiot A person of profound mental retardation having a mental age below three years and generally being unable to learn connected speech or guard against common dangers. Imbecile A person of moderate to severe mental retardation having a mental age of from three to seven years and generally being capable of some degree of communication and performance of simple tasks under supervision. 3. Victor Many thanks for your assistance. I recently managed to obtain a bool called "A Noth-East Coast Town" Ordeal and Triumph. It is the Story of Kingston Upon Hull in the 1939-1945 Great War. The book has many photographs. Unfortunately, there wasn't any of Osborne Street. As well as the place of my mother's birth nearly all my Uncles and Aunties were born there also. Once again many thanks Brian Australia ( As a family we immigrated to Austalia in 1950) > Osbourne Street is where Hull Brewery used to have their brewery. 3. Brian, Do you have an exact address? The even numbers were on the north side of the street. Behind the shops and houses fronting the street there were also many courts and yards with houses, especially on the north side. I think that many of these were probably cleared before WWII in slum clearances. There was allso bomb damage. I have a photograph from c1940/1941 of the north side taken from the corner of Waterhouse Lane showing destruction of properties (probaably Nos. 2 - 10) and the Methodist Chapel. Beyond this Nos. 12 and 14 are still there, but beyond ths are what look like factory buildings, which makes me think that some of the housing had been cleared and redeveloped before WWII. 2. Brian Osbourne Street is where Hull Brewery used to have their brewery. It is also where the department store Edwin Davis was. The building is still there but empty and will soon be demolished. There are no houses in the street but my guess is they could have been bombed in the last war. That is how I have seen Osbourne Street. I have just been looking at a book called 'Forgotten Hull' by Graham Wilkinson so I will be scanning some pages from this book and will send these off list. it could be that Osbourne Street as it is now may not be the same one when your mother was born. 1. John Brown of Bridlington
    2. Christine Roderick
    3. Hello listers Thanks to lots of assistance from you the Brown side of my ancestry is now clearly established. I have one problem - where was John Brown in 1851? I can't find him anywhere. He would have been about 30. He was a seaman, and possibly at sea, but an old family tale related that he was at one time in prison, and that is the reason why two of his sons were packed off to Sheffield to be apprenticed. I would have discounted this but for the fact that a recently discovered 3rd cousin who I have never met, also knows this story. Is there a grain of truth in this?. He changes his place of birth to Hull instead of Bridlington Quay in all later censuses. The two boy were certainly apprenticed in the early 1850s, and the link with Sheffield goes back 2 generations previously to an earlier wandering Brown who finished up there and married a Sheffield woman. But I am baffled by John's disappearance and reappearance. HAs anyone got any suggestions? Chris Roderick
