    3. On the more general theme, it is important to remember that finding an ancestor described in certain medical terms may well not give you an accurate view of their condition. If I can give two examples from my experience of reading and talking to people some years ago when the whole issue of care in the community was being raised. 1. It was evidently not unknown for a woman to be committed to what was then called a mental handicap hospital because she had had an illegitimate child. 2. As late as the second half of last century parents who had given birth to " a mentally handicapped child" (not my words) were advised to put the child in hospital and have another. Many such children now live active fulfilled lives in the community. On the general lack of sensitivity two friend who had a Downs daughter were told on meeting the consultant: "You've got the original Cabbage Patch Doll." We have made progress! 3. I am trying to find any information on Mary Hepton. The information which I have is that she was Christened on June 24, 1822 in Brandesburton, Yorkshire, England. Her mother is shown as Elizabeth Hepton. Could someone look up this information for me (or tell me where I might look) as I would like to know if there is a father named on the Christening, and possibly a birth date. Also, would Brandesburton, be near Mappleton? Thank you. Harold Glen Bradley, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Also researching, Bradley (Broadley). -- No virus found in this outgoing message. They can be found at http://prismdata.hullcc.gov.uk/gallery/albums.php There is several photos there of Osborne Street, including one with no 87 which is noted as "No.87 is Mrs. Annie Sliw grocer". There is also one showing the 8 houses and 5 privies in Appleyards Building. Regards Keith D.

    3. Hi Victor That was exactly my point and I agree with you entirely. I understand these terms were in official use in the first part of last century and the labelling of Joey Deacon was the result. It did not seem to occur to people that he might have none of these conditions. People must be looked at as individuals with abilities and needs and not responded to in a knee jerk way. These definitions are certainly not mine. When I worked in adult education the widespread policy was that if some one was mentally ill you provided drama and music, if they were mentally disabled then literacy, if they were old then crafts. I am with you entirely.
