    1. Batty Place, Scarborough
    2. While on the subject of the surname BATTY, does anyone know where Batty Place, Scarborough was located? It seems to have been close to Sandside, as the given address of some of my mother's 19th Century relatives seems to fluctuate between Batty Place and Sandside. Also why was it called Batty Place? Again my mother's family MENNELL also moved from Sculcoates in the middle of the 19th Century to Scarborough, so is there a wider connection? Peter

    1. BATTY
    2. I'm afraid I have no detailed information regarding this family but I do have a mystery which those who do have Batty's in their FT may be able to help me with. My grandmother who died in 1981 used to talk about an "Aunt Batty" visiting. My grandmother's family lived in Sculcoates, Hull (where she and a sister were born) and later in Rimswell, Withernsea. I would suspect that she meant that this "Aunt" would be visiting her family home and not her home following her marriage to my grandfather. I'm also not sure that she was a 'real' Aunt or an adoptive Aunt. My question therefore is: Has anyone researching the BATTY family found a link to the BARNFATHERs? Her father was David and his father William Fenton, born c 1740.The family seems to have lived in the Lockington area during this time. If anyone has more on these folks, I would love to hear from you. 3. Dear Josephine, Any surviving bastardy orders for Acklam (by Malton)will probably be in Quarter Sessions records at the East Riding Archives at Beverley: http://www.eastriding.gov.uk/libraries/archives/welcome.html You can search the catalogue online, though I am not sure if all Quarter Sessions records are on the online catalogue. Your difficulty in obtaining the correct film for the Parish Register of Acklam in the East Riding from the LDS Church perhaps stems from the rather confused state of their catalogue. They appear to list Acklam (East Riding near Malton) as Acklam. however, there is another Acklam in the North Riding which appears in their cataloge as West Acklam. I think that the film number for the East Riding Acklam Parish Register is: FHL BRITISH Film 1068307 Items 1 - 8 However, there may be a different number if you not in the UK. Correction 1841 census, not 2842! ...it's monday... ----- Original Message ----- From: Josephine Laxton To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, September 26, 2005 9:31 AM Subject: Malton Messenger Hello, I have not posted anything for quite awhile but I am trying to find a couple of missing pieces re my family of Elliot(t)s of Acklam... Firstly would anyone know where I can locate, or would anyone have easy access to the Community Chest or Bastardy orders in regards to the time frame 1835-9 for Acklam (may be held in Malton) as Acklam is either listed as Acklam by Norton, or alternatively Acklam by Malton. I am looking specifically for any link to Akin (Aikins) Elliott who was christened in Acklam on 20 Jan 1837 in Acklam by Malton it lists his mother Ann Elliott as a single woman at this time. She later married and moved on I believe. Her son was raised by a family in Acklam named Clarkson...Aikins first appears on the 2842 census for Acklam, living with a family of Clarksons... Thomas Clarkson never married, he was a Cordwainer. His sister Elizabeth who remained a spinster lived with them, her occupation was Seamstress. It is thought that when this Thomas died, Aikin's was either Willed the business or bought it from Thomas's Estate, as he became the Master Shoe Maker for Acklam. He trained quite a few o! f his sons as Cordwainers. I am trying to find any mention of Aikin's father... logically I would assume that it might have been a man named Aikins... Secondly I have another mystery, Family Lore dictates that my grandfather's sister, great aunt Jane Elizabeth (Ginnie) Elliott. She was the daughter of Aikin's Elliott; was visiting America as her brother had emmigrated there in the late 1890's or early 1900's. She broke her trip to visit Quebec, where there were relatives living, this was in 1914. I have been told that aunt Ginnie having missed her original Berth home, managed to get a Berth on the Empress of Ireland... aunt Ginnie died on the 29th May 1914. There is no mention of her in the Passenger List... This can be accounted for by the fact that she probably got a Berth at the last minute and so took one of the original Passenger's Berths at the last minute... Another reason why her name was not on the list could be that she was married and under her husband's name. (I have not found a marriage for her to date). I do realize that many family tales are not usually pristine, but I find it difficult to believe that thi! s particular tale is not true...I say this because my grandfather was a Pillar of the Community where he then lived, being a staunch Methodist, not taking kindly to his children not following the upright path as he used to say. I cannot therefore believe that he would have told of his sister's demise on the Empress of Ireland, if it had not been true... I am hoping that there may be some note in the Church records of Acklam or Bulmer to this effect, as well there may have been a notation or Obituary in the Malton Messenger for her... I say this because my family of Elliotts were noted from the 1850's on, in the BMDs in the Newspaper. Any help or suggestions of how I might find the above information would be gratefully received. 3. Thank you to people for their replies. I use all three mediums: CD, DVD & paper. Storage of data on computers and working on documents has amajor role. However, I don't think you can beat the feel and touch of a good quality old book. To be able to hold it in your hands and turn the pages. Some how it seems more real. The week before last I was at a conference at the Royal College of Physicians. There were rooms with wall to wall, ceiling to floor shelves full of old books. Many 4-5 hundred years and more. It reminded me of the old library from Terry Pratchetts 'Unseed University', and the idea of the books having a life or soul of their own. Hence, my book is on disc and computer but I want to print it out. I don't want to go to a printers. They will charge me the earth. At 250 pages (sides) at A4 with colour prints. That's 30 p a sheet or £75 before binding. I want several copies. I've written to an archival company and await their reply. Hopefully they will a) advise and supply the paper b) will advise on the ink cartridges I use....or supply one which is compatible for my computer. Once printed I want it properly bound. I'm not Rothchild. If costs are too much then I'll have to abandon the idea but hopefully not. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Graham Metcalf" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, September 24, 2005 8:13 PM Subject: RE: [ERY] Enduring Documents > Hi Chris, > > I emailed an archivist friend with your request and here is the reply: > > The acid content of the paper (or rather the lack of it) is the important > thing.
