Can anybody with access to the 1861 census for Whitby help me decipher the name of the town / parish where my g-g-grandfather was born? He was JOHN MASON (age 62) and is listed in Boghall, Ruswarp, Whitby, page 18, RG 9/3649 and living with daughter Ruth Jones and grandson John Jones. His county of birth is almost certainly shown as Durham but can anyone tell me the town / parish? Doug

Les It will help considerably if you will put the surnames in CAPITALS. It will help to see the names you are searching easily. Listers: My GGGGrandfather JAMES TRAN life has been "stonewalled" in 1783 which was the year of his marriage to ANN JOHNSON in Mappleton East Riding Yorkshire. I have a copy of the marriage Banns identifying James Tran as a farmer from Carnaby Parish, and Ann Johnson as a Spinster from Mappleton Parish though she may have lived in Rowlston. As a potential of learning of his life earlier in that year I am aware in some limited detail that during the 1700-1800's the law required citizens to hold identifying papers referred to as "Right of Settlement". These papers were issued from the individuals parish and were a means to control the activities and travel of the citizens, the papers also may have personal information noting parents names and so forth. Records in Carnaby have been searched for Baptism , Birth or related activities for James to no avail, however I am aware that some parishes have indexed on Micro and or Disc records of ROS papers.....hopefully these may be a clue to finding James whereabouts in the mid 1700's. Your response would be a great service to my family. Len Tran Puyallup

Hi Pat~ Thanks so much for your help, so far. I would like to send for each of the "possible" ones, but rather costly. I would like to order a film, but I cannot bring up any 'deaths' at all on Family Search, for Benjamin Harrison after 1841. I shall ponder over what to do next. Thanks again. Hello Bill You can discount the first , as you've told me that you have the 1841 Census for him [ taken on 6 June }.....and the last BH has an age given [ under 1 year ]. March 1851 is very unlikely as that census was on 30 March. That leaves you with 4 possibilities ; it's annoying ages at death weren't indexed at that point , though , of course , shown on the actual certificate . Sorry not to be more helpful . What about the other one I sent you ? 1870 ~ age 74 ties in agewise... Good luck Pat
I've been doing some research recently at the Borthwick Institute for Archives in York, looking at the parish records for Crambe and Bossall. Bielby was a name that appeared regularly there. I have found a marriage on the IGI for a Wingfield Richard WILLIS and Ann BIELBY in Scarborough on 20th August 1829 and would be grateful for a look up. I don't suppose it will give me any more information but it is worth asking. I am trying to trace my 3x great grandfather and all I know is that on the census records he gives his birthplace as Scarborough and his wife Ann's as Bridlington and on his son's marriage certificate it gives his occupation as mariner. Hello Pat~ I went into FreeBMD and done each year on 'deaths' from 1841 to 1870. I found 6 Benjamin's that had died. I could not put in the spouse's name, unfortunately. Hi Pat~ Thank you for the reply... Gosh, his wife, on the 1841 census is Ann, along with the list of children. The only other items I have are the marriage records, mentioned below, of his son Robert, and also his son John. There is also a write up on GENUKI: The Parish of Bossall with Buttercramb. an article written by Rev. NY.Hooper. It mentions Benjamin HARRISON, 3/4 down in the paragraph. He hunted polecat or foumart within the area of the hunting grounds of the Anglo-Saxon kings. Written in the churchbook of Bossall by Churchwardens: Easter 1833, paid to Benjn. HARRISON, Keeper, for six foumarts, 2s 0d. Sons: Robert born in Claxton, Bapt. in Bossall June 10, 1832 Stephen " " " " July 26, 1835 5 Earlier children born in Elvington, starting in 1819. The only marriage on Family Search for 'a' - Benjamin & Ann is Nov.25,1815 Saint M Mary Bishophill Senior, York, Yorkshire. But I am not sure if this is them of not. I have no other proof. Possibly them?? I am just wondering if there is another way, of searching for more information on him. Many thanks for you help, Bill From: <[email protected]> wrote...
