    3. Philip Many thanks for taking the time to help me. I totally agree about the need to verify the information. It's very interesting to see the original census documents themselves. I think a trip to Northallerton Records Office is now called for. I live in Staffordshire and it's about 160 miles from here so I guess it will probably in the Spring. Thanks once again. 3. Hi Doug Actually, I said the IGI entry was likely to be his. Although quite possibly correct, you can't accept that John's mother was Hannah simply because John's age and birthplace match an IGI entry of baptism. You need to do further research, for example: parish register; bastardy order, apprenticeship indenture. In 1851, there is a William Mason in the preceding household to John & Ann Mason in Ruswarp. William's wife Sarah is in Fylingdales with two children; William & Ann, in the household of her parents. Am sending you the census images. Good luck with your research. Also his grandson John LOWDER (I have him as LOWTHER) To also find his mother's name (Hannah) is a real bonus. His son William, my g-grandfather, had married Sarah Newton of Fylingdales at St Mary's Whitby in 1847. Can you tell me if he is listed in Whitby in 1851? Many thanks once again. 3. Mary I spotted Crayke on an old map of County Durham. It was shown as an inset but I couldn't identify where it was. I've located it now, as you say, in Yorkshire but belonging to Durham. It is only 20 miles or so from Pickering where his children were eventually born. Many thanks for your contribution. 3. Graham I wondered about Crook, that would have had a larger population than most of the other likely matches, so has a higher probability. You also answered my un-asked question about the accent. That "Folk Talk" is a great resourse. It's almost an exact match "Crook, a. C. (pr. creeak, sometimes crewk)." Thanks Graham. Ever onward. 3. Thanks for that Judith, yes it does look like CREAK but I can't find any reference to such a place even with an open search on Google. I wonder if he is listed on another census? I certainly can't find him on 1881. 3. Hi Doug It would seem to be CREAK, Durham. Never heard of it but it could be that it was a small area which no longer exists. Some of my ancestors were born in Tottenham, Durham and this place was just 2 very long terraces of houses. Tottenham no longer exists. Perhaps someone else may know more. Good luck Judith Kettlewell ----- Original Message ----- From: "Doug" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 14, 2005 10:50 PM Subject: [ERY] Handwriting Problem > Can anybody with access to the 1861 census for Whitby help me decipher the > name of the town / parish where my g-g-grandfather was born?
