Hello List, Having a deleting finger that works significantly faster than my addled brain I have deleted, by mistake, an 1871 Census Image for Jane RYMER aged 38, at Moxon Square, Hull RG10/4790 Folio 30 Page 23. Would SKS with access to the 1871 Census be prepared to replace it for me please. David.
The question relates to an entry in the 1841 census for Sculcoates. The entry for my 3g-grandfather in the column "Where born: Whether born in same county" is a "Y" overwritten with an "N", all the other people on that page have an clear "Y in that column . It might help to clear up the mystery of his birthplace if I knew the reason for what appears to be an error. My question is: Was the East Riding a separate adminstrative area from the West Riding in 1841? If it was, the original answer could have been, Yes, I'm a Yorkshireman, but No I was born in the West Riding, hence the overwrite. Any comments would be appreciated. Regards - Peter
Thank you at all those who took the time to reply to my query. I appreciate the information very much. cheers Linda (Perth West Oz) -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, 4 December 2005 7:39 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ERY] Online researching after 1910 Also don't forget http://www.yorkshirebmd.org.uk/ which is also free andshould include those BMD's which failed to reach the GRO. Hi all Can someone please tell me how to go about looking for bmd's online, after 1910. Even though the Civil Registration says 1837 - 1984 it seems to stop dead at 1910. cheers Linda (Perth West Oz)

Hi Linda Is this in reference to FreeBMD site? There are other sites where you have to pay for the privilege to view BMD records such as 1837online http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/LogonServlet Maria
Hi from sunny West Oz, I have a puzzle and I am hoping that all the brilliant listers that subscribe to this wonderful list (is that enough sucking up???), can guide me to a solution. I have James EVERETT b c 1834, Catwick, Yorks, who according to the 1881 census, married to Ellen b c 1844, Beverley, Yorks. With them resided the following offspring. Henry TATE - stepson - aged 15, b London Middlesex James W TATE - stepson - aged 11, b London, Middlesex John TATE - stepson - aged 8, b Scotland Thomas S TATE - stepson - aged 9. b Scotland AND Ann E EVERETT - daughter - aged 5, b Beverley, Yorkshire Charlotte EVERETT - daughter - aged 4, b Beverley, Yorkshire Martha A EVERETT - daughter - aged 2, b Beverley, Yorkshire I searched for John & Thomas birth records in Scotland and came up with Thomas Scruton TATE, b 25/05/1871, Coldstream, Berwick, Scotland - Father: John TATE, Mother: Ellen SCRUTON John TATE, b 01/01/1873, Coldstream, Berwick, Scotland - Father: John TATE, Mother: Ellen SCRUTON And in England Henry Amos TATE, christened 18 May 1859, Auckland Saint Andrew, Durham, England - Father: John TATE, Mother: Ellen John William TATE, christened 25 June 1862, Auckland Saint Andrew, Durham, England - Father: John TATE, Mother: Ellen I also found Ellen SCRUTON married John TATE, 25 Dec 1868, Saint James, Westminster, London I perhaps erroneously assumed that Ellen married John TATE, he died or whatever and she married James EVERETT. HOWEVER, the only marriage I can locate for James EVERETT is that to Ellen LONGMAN on 22 Nov 1873, East Wellow, Hampshire. Can someone please help me work out where I have gone wrong? I can't work out how else the TATE boys would be with James and Ellen, unless they were her sons, yet the names don't match up properly. All records I have used are extracted records not people inserts. Cheers from a very puzzled and bewildered Linda (Perth West Oz)
Just a thought - is the Enumerator attempting to designate a Yorkshire North (Riding) town in which case the parish or village could be various locations e.g Helperby, Halnaby, Hawnby? Could it also end with 'ley' instead of 'by'? that raises many more chances. Just guessing! Paul It could perhaps be 'ley' on the end. The name can be found on the 1881 census. The name is C H Baker (have no idea what the C H stands for, but would love to find out), Sutton St Mary, Long Sutton. RG11/3208 102 Page 19. Son of John Baker of Little London, Long Sutton. Hi Peter I also have John's ancestry back to Joseph WING but would be very pleased to see your information to compare it with mine. Thanks very much. Would you like a copy of what I have on Paulina's family? It's not a great amount but I have her children in most of the censuses. Barbara
Content-type: Multipart/Alternative; boundary="Alt-Boundary-28574.534151781" --Alt-Boundary-28574.534151781 I have had a look at the census and the place name appears to be Hortesby or Horterby. The latter is how it has been transcribed on Ancestry. I have checked Genuki but there is no place listed on there. I have just found out that the father of William Hodgson isn't the John I thought it was! I have the following - 1861 census 100 thornton street John Hodgson, H, M, 27, Journeyman , Hull Ann , W, M, 25, , Hull 1871 census John Hodgson, H, M, 37, Grocer Master, Hull Ann , W, M, 34, , Hull the 1851 shows a John Hodgson, S, U, 17, Grocer, Hull as the son of William Hodgson at 53 Waterworks St. but I cant find the wedding for John Hodgson to Ann. (which would hopefully confirm his fathers name and give me Ann's surname.) They do have a daughter Mary A. who was born Driffield 1855. Can anyone help please? Neil.

To Jean, Thank you for the suggestion regarding South Dalton (Soudletown) - I think it makes phonetic sense, and will work on figuring out how to proceed from here. I surely appreciate your help. Regards, Susan Dobson
HI all Could SKS please help me to determine what this place may be. It is on the 1881 Census and the place of birth is recorded as something like...Yorks North H***esby. The last word is made up of possibly 7 letters definitely begins with an H and looks like by at the end. Many thanks cheers Linda (Perth West Oz)
My GGF known later as John (Owler)Ford Wainwright appears to have christened born as the illegitemate son of Ruth Foors in Muston in 1823. His baprismal name if John Oldgate Foord. Ruth was born in Sherbourne in 1801. In 1826 she married Matthew Wainwright in Dewsbury and John is clealry identified on 1841 in Dewsbury. A William Foord appears on the Muston electoral roll in 1834, tenant of not less than £50 per annum. My hypothesis is that Ruth may have gone to have John in Muston because her brother was there. It is possible that Oldgate is a reference to his father but IGI gives no Oldgates in the area. In 1841 she is a bobbin minder or winder in Dewsbury. Is it possible that she joined the exodus to the WR pre 1826 because parish supprt ran out. Would there be any records to showresponsibility of the birth? Any help gratefully received Robin Wainwright - Bristol UK
