Is it possible to get a list of printed regtisters available and an indication of the current form; i.e. fiche, book etc Richard Dawson
The current, map on AutoRoute, shows High Street and Main Street running into each other on the main thoroughfare and I would expect that it has been like that for the last couple of hundred years. It starts as Speeton Gate at the north end of the village, then becomes Main St., then High St., then Flamborough Rd., then Bempton Lane. Lancelot Howard Barron MIDDLESBROUGH U.K Web Site http://www.barron40.fsnet.co.uk/New_Web/Page_1x.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- I agree with Chris, there is no High St in Bempton, nor could I find a Main St. Sorry. Mike
David, Looking at a modern map, it's possible that the present High St. corresponds to what is called Scarborough Rd on the 1891 Census, but this is not absolutely certain. In any event the only street on the 1891 census which has properties numbered up to 16 and beyond is Scarborough Rd. Whether nos. 14 and 16 in 1891 equate to the properties in High St today with the same numbers is an entirely different matter. The street may have been renumbered. Matching properties enumerated in 1891 with specific properties as they exist today is fraught with difficulties. In 1891 14 Scarborough Rd is the 'White Horse' occupied by Barrett Pudsey, Farmer & Publican, age 40 born Bempton and Mary his wife age 24 born Bempton, plus Elizabeth Foster, single, domestic servant age 21 born Nafferton. (RG12 Piece 3960 Folio 72 page 7). No. 16 (on the following page) is occupied by Riby Appleby, age 48, shoe maker, born Muston, his wife Ann age 49 born Flixton and 2 sons and one daughter all born Bempton: Francis M age 22, wheelwright & joiner, Mary Eli age 16 domestic servant and Alfred E (possibly Er) age 14 scholar. In 1901 Mary Pudsey (age 34) is still at the White Horse as a widow, but the property is ascribed no number on the 1901 census. This illustrates nicely the difficulty of matching properties enumerated on the census at these dates with modern addresses. The numbers given to the properies in 1891 may have been entirely of the enumerator's devising. On the 1901 census none of the properties enumerated in the civil parish of Bempton are given numbers, though some are given descriptions such as Post Office, Blacksmiths shop etc. The course of the present High St through Bempton village centre has not always been as now or as it may have been in 1891/1901. The 1851 OS map shows the street through the village taking a much more circuitous route. On the 1851 map it is rather unfortunately named Back Side! David, There does not appear to be a High Street enumerated in either the 1891 or 1901 censuses in the village of Bempton. If there is a High Street today perhaps it had a different name in those years. Hello Glen,thanks-I already had all that info ,BUT did find Violet's marriage-and possibly their children later yesterday-Yorkshire BMD. They are my late father's aunt and her family. Thanks,Jean
This is not a family I am interested in, but I offer the following observations. FreeBMD (http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl) gives a probable marriage of Gertrude Haram and Ernest Radford in the last quarter of 1896. An Ernest Radford was born in Hull in the June quarter of 1875. In 1896-1900, there are 6 Radford births. These are probably in 2 separate families. Violet's birth is recorded in the first quarter of 1897. While FreeBMD will cover the probable year of Violet's marriage, 1917, that year has yet to be indexed. -- Glen Johnson Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~wmjohnson1832 -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, December 15, 2005 3:03 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [ERY] Radford Family Hi,is there anyone researching the family of RADFORD in Hull area please?I want the death dates of my gt aunt Gertrude and her husband Ernest-they married in 1896 in Hull.I also would like the date of marriage/death of Violet their daughter.Would like to make contact with anyone from this family.TIA.Jean. ==== ENG-EAST-YORKS Mailing List ==== Other Rootsweb Genealogy Lists http://lists.rootsweb.com/ ============================== Jumpstart your genealogy with OneWorldTree. Hi The only way, apart from finding a relative who is also researching, would be to get the marriage certificate which would give you George's fathers name and help you to know which family are yours in 1901, 1891 etc Regards Angela >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [ERY] New Subscriber Surnames KIRBY and TURNER >Date: Sat, 10 Dec 2005 11:19:02 EST > >I have a George Kirby who married Eleanor Dorothy Turner Sept qtr 1903 at >Hull > I can find Eleanor on the 1901 but I am having difficulty finding >George because there are quite a few on the 1901 and I do not have his >fathers >name. > Hopefully there is some other person reseaching these names > Marianne > > >==== ENG-EAST-YORKS Mailing List ==== >This list is only as good as you make it.
