Dear All, My interests in East Yorkshire are centered around the family of LANGDALE of Kingston upon Hull who were in Barton le Street in the 1861 census. George LANGDALE born about 1856 at Barton le Street and on census 1881 at Kingston upon Hull, was son of John LANGDALE born about 1823 and Mary who died in 1883. George was married twice, having two sons, George Robert born 31.8.1878 who married Bertha ELLYARD and John W. born 1880 by his first wife Mary. His second wife was Ellen FOXALL by whom he had two daughters. Bertha ELLYARD born 17.2,1881 at Hull was the daughter of Marmaduke ELLYARD, born Cottingham 1828 and his second wife Jane SHEARSMITH, born 1842. Marmaduke was the second son of William ELLYARD [baptised 24 March 1798 at Nafferton], and Ann. Their other sons were Samuel and John. William was the son of Samuel ELLYARD [1752-1834] and Rachel BARKER who were married at Nafferton 2 February 1791 and had 5 sons John, Samuel, William, Nicholas and Charles and three daughters Hannah, Nanny and Mary between 1791 and 1809. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who is connected to these families or who has information on them. Regards Mildred Robson, North Shields.

Mark One of my father's(died 1933) executors was Marfleet FEATHERSTONE, commonly know as Mark. He was an auctioneer. Richard
Hi Murray Thanks a lot for your information, I desperately needed some good lateral thinking. I am sure we will find there is at least a link early on as Laverack is quite a distinctive name and they all stuck together in the early days. I am also pleased to see the Hairsine's are globally active in research. I have a good handle on most of William Laverack and Mary Bird's many descendants; I just cannot make real progress on William's family (apart from his sister Elizabeth). There are two other possible siblings on the IGI for Bubwith. Thomas baptised 1 Jan 1801 and Alice baptised 9 Mar 1798. I will order Eastrington parish registers on film as I see it is very close indeed to Balkholme as the crow flies and your Thomas is in the right time frame. In one of my old notebooks I have transcribed some Priestley's from the Howden register (but not Sarah) located at Duncotes which I find from multimap is literally just around the corner from Balkholme so I will also add Howden registers again to my growing list of re-looks. Hello Murray, I saw your email to ERY, and I too have the Laverack connection to the Hairsines. I became interested in the Hairsines because an Armitage married into the family, my GGGrandfather was John Armitage, b 1793 at Newport. I am at the moment wading through the Eastrington register, and getting myself interested in any family which touched the Armitages. John himself eventually took himself off to Aldbrough, but he left behind in the Eastrington district plenty of his kinsfolk. It would be nice to compare notes. John MAYNARD entered the Diocesan Training College, York, on 03 Apr 1843. Records reveal that his father was John, a labourer, his age 22 years, and that he was baptised at Halsham on 21 Apr 1819. I know - someone wasn't too strong on maths! The occasion of his baptism appears to be recorded in IGI as John MENNARD: father John, mother Mary. Phonetically, the two surname options have little between them - but should I presume misinterpretation or mistranscription? Or should I stick to my normal rule of never presuming anything that important, choosing instead to visit Halsham and view the record for myself? All later reference to John Jnr. have him as a Maynard, yet google reveals several references to the name Mennard, even John Mennard, as a possibility for that part of the county and around that time. After what must have been a colourful and varied career following his calling, Rev. John Maynard returned close by his place of birth at the time of his death, 03 Feb 1893, when he was the vicar of Burstwick. All recommendations for B+B, or good old fashioned pub accommodation in the Holderness area will be gratefully received :) Brian VARRALL Okehampton
The Archives in Beverley [ A2A record ] have the following interesting mention od ' spittle ' Accounts for repair of road to Thorngumbald 17th century fo3-9 Hull to Hedon Turnpike Road Act 1830 fo11 Letter from J Dunthorne to Messrs Frost, solicitors of Hull related to the loss of the Ellen. They are a 'pair of unprincipled pettyfoggers', et cetera with reference to 'the lick-spittle Levett' c.1830 fo12-13 Forms of notice to send men to work on Hull to Hedon turnpike road 1830 fo14 Strange but the description 'unprincipled pettyfoggers' could still apply these days. The East Yorks FHS MIs for St Mary & St Nicholas Beverley has details of a memorial to Ralph FEATHERSTONE who died Jan 3 1764 aged 64 and his wife Ann, daugther of Thomas and Mary TRUBY who died March 3 1789 aged 69 The East Yorks Archives have some references of A2A showing Ralph to have been a Tanner and Gent and his widow Ann connected to Spittle House, North Bar. If anyone has any further details I would be interested as we have compiled a large amount of FEATHERSTONE data. Mark Andrew Halifax
Hi David Sorry I can find no connection for your Charles JEWITT with my JEWITT's who were all farmers although there may be some relationship of which I am not aware. The Jewitt's are not one of my major lines. Have you visited the JEWITT website at http://www.jowitt1.org.uk/ ? It is well worth a visit. Good luck Paul Underwood
Hi Beryl I have 15 Ann UNDERWOOD's in my database but only 2 are from the 1700's. Unfortunately neither of them appear to be your Ann. I am also struggling somewhat with my Underwood line in the 1700's but mine are from the Hemingbrough and subsequently the Blacktoft area although there are possible links to Barmby on the Marsh and Asselby. Sorry we don't appear to have a match. Good luck. Paul Underwood
Thank you Chris.Jean
Dear Barbara Thanks for the welcome email. I will keep my eyes peeled for a St. Paul connection or reference while I am trawling through LDS films. I have been stuck on the Holme on Spalding Moor registers of late but think I will take a break and come back to the film later in the year with fresh eyes and a stronger magnifying glass/spectacles. Whilst I think of it, for those Jewitt researchers, I know there are quite a few Jewitt Laveracks scattered around the EYR, although I have no connection to them I have always noticed Jewitt when used as a first name as I found it unsual. Kind Regards to you too, Ann -----Original Message----- From: Barbara [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, January 30, 2006 2:56 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [ERY] Re: Laverack, Bird, Vardall Families of East Riding Dear Ann: Welcome to the list and I'm sure someone will be able to help you. Many of my Yorkshire ancestors came from the towns you mentioned but Bird, Laverack and Vardall haven't featured so far in my family tree. However, if you come across anyone with the surname of ST. PAUL, I would love to hear from you. Kind regards, Barbara, Auckland, NZ
Thanks for your sharing your information Bill. Unfortunately I don't know of a connection as yet, but I have the following and am hoping to learn more as most of the early Lav*r*ck families are in clusters around the EYR: 3 x g-grandparents - Thomas Laverack and Sarah Priestley (mis-transcribed in register by incumbent as Preston) both of the Parish, married at Bubwith 25 November 1787. No burials yet found. I have been wondering if they moved around the district from Balkholme to possibly Harlthorp. 2 x great grandfather William Laverack born 26/08/1788 at Balkholme, christened at Howden 21/09/1788.
