    3. Hi all I just wondered ...... if Jason doesn't know the names of William Jefferson Cook's parents, wouldn't the most logical step be to look for WJC's marriage certificate, which would at least provide his father's name and ensure Jason was on the right track? Generally speaking you really should look for someone's marriage before you start looking for their birth certificate, or should certainly get both to make sure they tally ? 3. Maria Last summer I made contact with a newly found third cousin who sent me loads of hard copy details of his side of the the family. He is in his 80's so had little confidence in using computers. He only used this for emails. Any way the hard copies he sent I scanned and put them all onto my computer. Among the things he sent was a photograph of his parents grave in Cheshire. He also sent a newspaper copy about the crematorium services of his parents. I was puzzled about that. My puzzlement was how did they have a crematorium service and then they were both buried in the cemetery? I asked my cousin about this. He explained that the grave was his grandparents grave and that they simply scattered the ashes on the grave. They also changed the headstone which mentioned only his parents. There was no mention of his grandparents on the headstone, despite this being 'their' grave! In cases like this it is the cemetery records that needs checking and not the Monument Inscriptions. Unfortunately I don't think the the cemetery record will give you details of the epitaph shown on the MI. You will need to contact the cemetery department at Chanterlands Avenue for details of the burial. If they can tell you where the burial took place then hopefully the MI will still be there. Going by what I have said a later relation may have changed the headstone. Instead of looking at MI's it will help if you can check cemetery records first. 3. There is no reason was cremated remains cannot be buried in a cemetery. My mother received "earth burial" but my father, who was living with me when he died two years later, wished to be cremated. He was, and was then buried beside my mother and his date of death added to the memorial stone, which already contained his other particulars. When my wife died, fourteen years ago, she was cremated and buried, with a common stone that included both our details. The only piece of missing information was/is my date of death which is not yet a fait accompli, but which will be added in due course, when my remains are cremated and laid beside her. In the Province of Ontario, it is actually illegal to scatter remains, cremated or otherwise, on land or water. However, let me tell you a little story. A friend of ours, with whom we did historical re-enactments, wished to have his ashes scattered on the St. Lawrence River. At a re-enactment of the Battle of Crysler's Farm (War of 1812-14, where the invading Yankees were soundly whipped and sent scurrying back across the river), a group of his friends gathered in a secluded spot next the river. His remains ere loaded into a small military mortar. Unfortunately, when the gunner touched his linstock to the touch hole, the mortar refused to fire. We then had to unload our late comrade (we got most of his ashes back into the plastic bag), reloaded the powder (and the late departed), and this time it fired and his remains were launched over the river, as he had wished. I thought it a singularly appropriate, if illegal, burial for someone who had spent his life researching the military history of 18th and early 19th century Canada. UP THE GUNNERS! 3. There is a William J. Cook age 8 in the 1891 England Census and the son of Alfred Cook, grocer and Mary J. Cook, living at Beverley. In the 1901 England Census he is age 19 and a grocer's assistant, living at Hilderthorpe near Bridlington. This William would therefore have been born in 1882 or the first quarter of 1883. He was born at Escrick which is 6 miles south of York and in 1882 Escrick was in the York Registration District. This is quite likely the same person as the William Jefferson Cook registered in the York Registration District in the Sep Quarter of 1882 but it doesn't take Jason much further as he doesn't previously know the names of William's parents. 3. Hello Carol, The Screetons that I have (just in case you find a link at any time) are :- Barker Screeton married Millisant Frankland on 26th of July 1818 in the parish of Sutton in Yorkshire. On January 8th 1832 they had Ann baptised in the parish of Drypool in Yorkshire. There were other children but Ann is mine, On 5th June 1852 Ann Screeton married Francis Hulmes in the parish of Manchester. Barker Screeton called himself John when Ann married. Also on the 1861 census. On 17th April 1800 in Selby in Yorkshire a Barker Scraton was baptised. His mother was Jane Scraton. At the moment I have only seen this on the IGI. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I don't know if this is any help but according to the IGI a Hannah Skreeton was baptised on 15th March 1774 in St John and St Martin in Beverley in Yorkshire. Her father was Christopher Skreeton. 2. I am not related to the Scrutons of Foxholes. Mr Scruton operated an iron fouindry there and my father, a farmer at Thwing, occasionally did business with him and my brother and I got to look round his premises. One anecdote about Mr Scruton has him building some houses and omitting to put in the necessary 'facilities'. When challenged to put them a 'spot' in he replied "Nay, when't time comes they'll find a spot" Richard Dawson __________________________________________________ Get an exclusive discount on Norton 360 from Tiscali http://www.tiscali.co.uk/products/securepc

    3. I would appreciate it if someone could kindly look up a marriage at Hull Holy Trinity, probably in 1789. Sarah Webster was bap at Hull HT 03 APR 1772. As Sarah Hawdon, she was buried 18 MAR 1790. It is thought that she married Thomas Hawdon at Hull HT. Thomas was the organist at HT where Sarah was a daughter of the curate. Thomas died in Newcastle upon Tyne only 3 years later, in 1793, aged 28. Many thanks and best wishes Bill.

I was not able to find any Scruton/Screton baptisms etc. in the Parish registers for Thornton so this is where I am stuck as I cannot find a Baptism for Hannah and not sure where to look next.
