    1. [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Bradley/Broadley
    2. Harold Glen Bradley
    3. My ggg-grandfather whose name was George Broadley came to Canada from Mappleton, Yorkshire, England in the 1840's and moved to Ontario (then called York). He changed his name to Bradley at that time. I have done extensive research on the Bradley's and Broadley's who were born, married and died in Ontario since then and have digital copies of most of these in my files. If anyone is researching these names and would like to get copies of any ancestors that have moved to Canada, I would be pleased to forward them to you. Please let me have as much details as you can so I can trace them, if at all possible. Harold Glen Bradley

    1. [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Anderson family of Filey
    2. susan Roose
    3. Hi - I'm new to this list and am working on the Anderson family of Filey. Mary Anderson was born Feb 11, 1806, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Anderson. This info was in a family Bible. Mary married Thomas Warris of Sheffield (found in the 1841 census) and had a number of children. Thomas Warris died sometime around 1842 and Mary Anderson Warris and her children moved to Philadelphia PA. I have found no other information on William or Elizabeth Anderson. Would love to know if anyone knows of them. Thanks Sue Roose Virginia

    3. Hi Bill, Not that I am aware of. I posted this same question on the Yorksgen list a week or two back, with no response. It would be very useful indeed if someone did for One-Place Studies what the Goons do for One-Name Studies. I know that Malton, Bubwith and Pocklington have studies, and I am sure that there must be more out there. 2. Victor Markham
    3. Colin There are towns with their own web site. Whether you could describe them as coming under 'One Name Study' has to be decided. I do know Cottingham has had it's own site for quote a few years now. Possibly you could say this one is a 'One Name Study' It does give some historical facts and lists famous people from the village (it used to be described as the largest village in the country). See http://www.cottinghamuk.co.uk/ There are photos of Cottingham Church on the site. I note that in Genuki the church is mentioned as being difficult to photo. There are other place name web sites but these are more of a commercial nature and hardly gives any historical data on the place. Victor Colin Withers wrote: > Hi Bill, > > Not that I am aware of. 3. I love your anecdote about the 'spot'! I wonder which Mr Scruton of Foxholes it was. John Scruton of Foxholes died in 1917. I have a letter from him written to his niece (my namesake) & brother in 1914 just after John's wife died. He says he may not keep on 'the girl' working for him as her family has 'bad blood'. If you Google these names you will find the Internet Surname database. It gives meanings & several variations of both names but doesn't link the two. 3. Hi Victor Thanks for your help. I am not sure too which nephew Henry wrote the epitaph. There are three possibles in Lincolnshire, as well, as the two in Hull. Then there could be others in parts of the country, and those that were born and died between census returns. I was hoping that it may have been for one of George's children, and the MI had been recorded by EYFHS. 3. Further to the mail I just sent, I think Malton is possibly a mis-transcription in the 1891 census, looking at the 1861 and 1871 censuses, there is a Mary Jane Jefferson born Melton and as the marrige is registered in Sculcoates I think this is more likely. So William J may well have been born in Melton perhaps, at his grandparents home and registered in his home parish. The railway would be available for travel between York and Hull I think, so perhaps the journey was not so difficult between the two places, though possibly quite expensive. Sheila Coy

    3. I think The William J Cook in the 1891 census mentioned by Wendy and Richard is the right guy. I notice his mother was born in Malton, and it is possible that he was born at his grandmothers mothers home (It was very common that a daughter would return home for a birth). His birth being registered in his home parish of Escrick. . Malton is not far from York, though it is a different registration District. BUT his parents were married in 1878 in the Sculcoates District, of which Malton is a part. Though the censuses show his birth and that of his siblings as Escrick. Either way I am sure you will be purchasing the right certificate using the Escrick registration Sheila Coy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brad Rogers" <brad@fineby.me.uk> To: <eng-east-yorks@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 05, 2008 6:35 PM Subject: Re: [ENG-EAST-YORKS] Need some help obtaining a name..... > On Sat, 5 Jan 2008 18:11:00 -0000 > "Sheila Coy" <sheila@coy-home.fsnet.co.uk> wrote: > > Hello Sheila, > >> If he was born in Melton, why was he registered in York?
