I have been able to discover the following HAWDON information: Matthias HAWDON: Died Newcastle upon Tyne 19 MAR 1789. Organist, instrumentalist and impresario, composer and teacher. Of Newcastle, employed variously at Hull Holy Trinity and Beverley Minster, returned to St Nicholas Newcastle. Honoured by burial beneath the church's organ. Thomas HAWDON: son of the above. Born circa 1765. Died Newcastle 24 NOV 1793 aged 28. Buried from St Nicholas's Newcastle 26 Nov 1793. Organist, instrumentalist, impresario and teacher. Commenced as organist at St Andrew's Newcastle aged 18, moved to Dundee, succeeded his father at Hull Holy Trinity, returned to Newcastle on the death of his father, organist at All Saints Newcastle. On the 25th December 1787 there was a letter printed in the Hull Packet to the parishioners of Holy Trinity from Tho. Hawdon thanking them on his election to the post of organist. His wife, Sarah Webster, predeceased him in March 1790, in Newcastle, leaving one daughter, Sarah HAWDON, born MAR 1790 in Newcastle, baptised Hull Holy Trinity 26 JUN 1790. Sarah HAWDON: I do not know what became of Sarah. She would have been aged 13 when last mentioned in the will of her grandmother dated 1803. I assume she married, from Hull, sometime from about 1807. Much of the above information came from the 2006 book 'Music Making in North East England in the Eighteenth Century', whose author, Roz Southey, was of great assistance. It seems to | be very prominent around Newcastle upon Tyne area. | | Sarah Webster was born in 1772 to Robert Webster, curate at Hull Holy | Trinity. Thomas Hawdon was appointed as organist at Hull HT around the late | 1780s. A Sarah Hawdon was baptised at Hull HT 26 JUN 1790. Thomas | returned as organist to All Saints Newcastle where he died in 1793 aged only | 28. In the 1803 will of Robert Webster's widow, Ann Webster, provision is made to | care for the seemingly orphaned granddaughter whose name is written there | (in a transcript copy) as Sarah Hawden. | | The union between a young but estimable church organist and the curate's | daughter is easily imagined. Valerie According to the 1929 Kellys directory 44 Witham Street was on the corner of Holborn St and was occupied by a Grocer called George William Andrew. 55 Sherburn Street was occupied by William Harry Burgess At that time according to the directory there were only three Crawshaws living in Hull Mrs Annie 13 Thomas Street Joe, a grocer at 21 and 23 Kent Street Thomas Harry a Warehouseman at 18 Clough Road. Many thanks Victor for more detail on my addresses at Witham and Sherburn St I take it they are still there and probably within walking distance of each other. The couple had 2 servants in 1901 and I guess they lived there too. The 55 Sherburn St house might be still recognisable. Herbert CRAWSHAW moved on to a variety of 'entrepreneurial' adventures, leaving Edith with two young sons, divorcing, marrying again (and possibly again). I'm recently in touch with a grandson but he does not use the internet. I'll keep gathering all these little clues. Thanks again Valerie
After you leave George Street you then cross over North Bridge, which spans the River Hull. On the East side of North Bridge you come to a road named Witham. With ends at the junction with Holderness Road. Sherburn Street is off Holderness Road. Victor R Lamplugh wrote: > Hi again, > > I lived in Hull some 35 years ago and pass through occasionally. Hi again, I lived in Hull some 35 years ago and pass through occasionally. From memory Sherburn Street is in an old residential area off one of the main roads into the city. Witham is an area close to the River Hull and predominantly industrial. I'm sure someone will come up with a better explanation. Incidentally if you can download Google Earth, I have just looked those addresses up and could see them very clearly' down to the cars on the roads. It is worth a try. Many thanks Richard for a swift reply. I have just found him with his 1 st wife Edith in the 1901 census as H Crashaw ! It took a bit of searching to get him. Thanks for your help. Valerie

This is my first posting in this area. It appears that a great uncle of mine Herbert CRAWSHAW spent some time in business in Hull about 1900-1910. At first he worked with his father Edwin in a ' drapery and hosiery 'business I think was called 'Bonanza '. There may have been more than one site. One a least is now possibly a garage. My informer, another relative was shown the place years ago. At marriage Herbert lived at 55 Sherburn Street I wonder if there is anyone with trade directories or phone books that could help me locate more precisely where they were ? Herbert later (1911?) traded in watches as H HAMMOND , Lucerne , Switzerland. This colourful character later worked for Tobler and maybe spent the war years in Switzerland arranging lotteries ! I am fascinated by this strange series of occupations and would like to trace more of his beginnings. He divorced and may have married 3 times in all. Can anyone provide any help from directories or electoral rolls please? Valerie in N Yorks
