    1. Re: [EEA] 1881 Census Transcription Errors
    2. Melanie
    3. To John Hanson, Unfortunately i havent got the original census copy of my maternal g-g-parents but i have the 1881 census on CD Rom from the LDS. I hunted for hours if not days trying to figure out where my relatives were on the census. I hasten to say i gave up and then tried my paternal relatives. Whilst searching i clicked the neighbour tab to have a look at others in the street just out of interest. A little way down the road were my family members. The family name was/is BAALHAM and they were transcribed was BRALHAM. I am sure there are many out there searching for lost relatives and i think its a great idea. Where is the fair and its date please? Never been and would love to drag my suffering hubby along. 3. All As part of the computer help section at the Fair this year we are running two desks, manned by volunteers (with a little arm twisting) to help people try and find their missing links in the 1881 census index. Part of this of course means that we need examples of known mistakes. My own classic one is of Henry Noyce that was transcribed as Henry Nogee. No wonder I could never find him in the middle of London. We want to make a display of these so if you have examples of errors or difficult to find entries I would be interested in hearing from you. Particularly if you have a scanned image of the original to show the difference. If you have images you will have to email me off list. A list will be kept of errors that we find and can be posted to the list afterwards if people are interested. For full details of the computer lecture and demonstration program please check the Society's web site at http://www.sog.org.uk/events/fair.html Regards John Hanson

    1. Re: [EEA] British Navy Exemption Certificate
    2. Linsey Sharpe
    3. With regard to the above topic mentioned - just a few extra snippets to enlighten anyone who has naval ancestry or an interest in naval history. My other half confirms that these certificates were indeed issued to prevent people in maritime trade being press ganged into the Navy. The occupations 'protected' included not only sailors, but ropemakers, sailmakers etc - in fact anyone who was connected with the naval industry. These skilled tradesman and seamen were in high demand and many of the best were employed by the major trading companies - who could not only provide better wages but also better conditions for their employees than the Navy could at that time. The certificates were a way to ensure that the best staff didn't get 'pinched' by the Navy gangs. I am also informed that the certificates did a roaring trade on the black market, changing hands for quite large sums, being much in demand with young sons of the gentry as a convenient way to avoid a life at sea! One interesting genealogical point for anyone with a family living in or around a naval area, is the practice of naming several sons after the father. You would find the father John Jones, say, with two or three sons also called John. The reasoning behind this is that said certificate was issued for 'John Jones' (the father) but was conveniently usable for any of the sons too should the need arise!! Incidentally, any other naval or military queries which listers may have are welcomed by said other half Keith, who, as an ex-submariner of 15 years, is always willing to show off his knowledge and help people out! Hope this has interested someone! Linsey, Suffolk

    1. [EEA] CD/London Marriages
    2. Jean E. Waterloo
    3. Bernie: The CD consists of: B: Bishop of London's office, 1521-1828 D: Dean and Chapter of Westminster's Office (all taken) 1598-1699 F: Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury. 1543-1869 V: Vicar-General's Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury 1660-1679 I saw another notation saying that the Vicar Generals Books are the only ones in existance from 5 Jan 1520-7 Dec 1597 which is the first 18 years before the earliest parish registars. I find the CD wonderful. You can search by groom or bride surname in the index and then go to the page number listed. It also lists in the index along with the common usage of the name, the various ways of spelling the name so that you don't miss out on a name because of a slight letter differenceby having it appear some other place in the index. It lists their age, occupation, residence, and most times the name of the brides father even if he is no longer living. It gives the date and the place they intend to be married. Then it is followed by a letter denoting the book from which it was extracted. It took the man that did this work 20 years back in the 1860's and he was the first one that was allowed to copy ANYTHING from them. Before you might be able to look, if you had connections but were not allowed to take even notes on your own info. Much of it had to be traslated from Latin. I think it is well worth the money even though I don't think any of my names, known to me at this time, are listed. We never know who may show up. ;-) Jean

    1. [EEA] BELL AND WORMALL OF WIMBOTSHAM & DITCHINGHAM NORFOLK UK
    2. Jayne Dafforn
    3. Hi List I wonder if someone could help satisify a hunch I am researching the Bell Family of Wimbotsham and Stow Bardolph. I have now got back to the mid 1700s to a couple called Herny Bell and Catherine Wormall. I have no dates such as birth, death etc. So as Wormall is less common than Bell I looked up just the surname on the 1831 census to see where it was likely to come from. Without exception they all came from somewhere called Ditchingham so I checked to see if some Bells there and yes there were so I want to know now if there were records for Ditchingham in the 1700s and if there were where are they likely to be? This couple have been bugging me for about six months because I know nothing about them except for their decendents. Any information welcome Yours Jayne
