Can anyone please help me find more info on the ancestors and descendants of Robert SCOGGINS born c.1846 at Laxfield, Suffolk, England. His wife was named Sarah (born at Kelsale, Suffolk) and at the time of the 1881 census they had two children, Herbert aged 11, born at Saxmundham, Suffolk and Jarvis aged 9, born at Saxmundham. ----- Original Message ----- From: <ENG-EAST-ANGLIA-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <ENG-EAST-ANGLIA-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 01, 2001 4:00 AM Subject: ENG-EAST-ANGLIA-D Digest V01 #67 --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Hallo List Owner, I am sorry I do not know who to address this to . However I have just joined the East Anglia List and the Suffolk list and the first time I posted a message to both lists I got an email immediately with an attachment / virus, which has never happened to me before. I have copied the headers and message below in case this is of any help. Fortunately I do not use a PC so it should not have any effect on my system, but it does make me wary of continuing on the lists. I wonder if SKS could help. George Barrett OXBURY (age 24)married Isabella RIPLEY (age 24)on 8/5/1869 at the Parish Church, Scarborough. He named his father as Jehoshua OXBURY, Labourer. On the 1881 census he is a blacksmith, age 36 living at 5 Atlas Place, Scarborough and states he was born in Norfolk. on the 1871 census he is a shoeing smith age 26 again born in Norfolk. I calculate his dob to be 1845 but having checked at the FRC the nearest I get is June 1846. However the certificate which I have ordered shows a George OXBORO' being born to John OXBORO' and Harriet LAKE. I have Jehoshua's death certificate (age 82) (where his name is given as Jehoshaphat OXBURY) in 1880. 1. Question - could Jehoshua/Jehoshaphat have been known as John? 2. Would looking at the parish records for the marriage of George Barrett show any difference to a copy of the Certificate? 3. Has anyone access to the 1861/1851 census records, who could look up George Barrett Oxbury living with Jehoshua/Jehoshaphat and any details of other family members. I do know from the 1871 census that George had a sister Maria and that she was living with Jehoshua in West Lexham (parsonage). 4. The birth certificate I have states that the birth was in Saham Toney a sub district of Swaffham - I cannot find West Lexham in my road atlas - would this have been part of Saham Toney? In other words have I the right birth certificate? What else can I do to make sure I do have the correct certificate? Any help gratefully appreciated. Kind regards Mo Thomas 3.
I wonder if someone in the Wisbech area would look up in the telephone directory and see if there are any Rawlins listed, please. I recently ran an ad for a week in the Fenland paper and received no response- yet I'm sure there must be some there. thanks Faith

Hi Everyone, Is anyone researching Claxton's in Norfolk? I have Susan (sometimes Susannah) Claxton b. 1858 in Downham in Norfolk. Her father was Thomas a shoemaker, b Norfolk in 1815. Thomas' wife, and possibly Susan's mother, and also named Susan was b.1834 in Norfolk. The family had moved to Stratford in Essex by the early 1870's or even before. Susan b. 1858 married a man named Candlett who was a licensed victualler and already had a son named Robert born 1871. Mr Candlett had died by 1881 as she had married Walter Wright and was living in Lower Andrew St, Silvertown, in Essex. She went on to marry Richard William Rose on the demise of Walter. Any leads gratefully received. Andy Wheatley
Tina, I happened to be looking at" Boyd's Marriages of Essex" and did not find any of the names you had listed except....BRIGHT. I stopped counting at 100 (I think there are 150-200) of them. They range from 1676 to 1858. I downloaded Boyd's Index of Essex Marriages some time ago and when ever there is an up-date it notifies me. This is how I got in to it this time. It must have had an up-date in the H's 'cause that's where it takes you but you can access all from there. So I will set E-addy as it came to me. http://www.tiptree.freeserve.co.uk/Boyds/Boydsindexh.htm You should have lots of fun with all these marriages. Jean

For anyone wanting to access the site, the address does not include the www - just census.pro.gov.uk Very useful site! Regards Tony A 08:43 29/04/01 +0100, vous avez écrit : For those subscribers who are searching for ancestors in Norfolk the PRO 1891 census site is now on line. This is a site set up as a trial with 500,000 names as a trial for the 1901 census on line. It is not supposed to be working till 1st may but I have today successfully found an ancestor who I have spent hours trying to find in the Census Fiches at the FRC (and in only 10 minutes!!). It is well worth a look - for a small fee you can obtain copies of the actual census return. The site can be accessed direct from the PRO site www.census.pro.gov.uk or via the Norfolk Family History pages on GENUKI.

We have an old family photo, date unknown except it is prior to 1905. The writing on the picture reads "Cooper Edmonds, 10 New Street, Wellington." It is a photo of my gg grandparents who lived in North Cove, Suffolk, the greater part of their lives, although the grandfather was born at Barnby, Suffolk and the grandmother born at Gillingham, Norfolk. Can anyone tell me where Wellington is. It could be Suffolk or Norfolk, but isn't at all in my gazetteer. Any help is greatly appreciated. Lila
