There is a fascinating book about Wortham by a former clergyman of the parish. It is called The Biography of a Victorian Village, Wortham, Suffolk, 1860 and is by Richard Cobbold. Lots of details about interesting locals plus paintings of them done by himself. Suffolk County Council also produce booklets about each village which are obtainable from the Record Office for a few pounds each. They contain extracts from 19th century directories, a survey of parish history and, usually, o/s maps of the village. You can find the address online by looking up Suffolk County Council, Libraries and Heritage. Hi all - Volunteers from the Norfolk Family History Society's Internet Branch have recently completed a web site listing all the parishes of Norfolk and their adjacent parishes. Each parish is linked to its neighbours for ease of navigation. Each parish also has links to the listing of its records in the Family History Library catalog, a map of the Registration District it is in, the GENUKI web page for that parish, and other links of interest for the parish. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nfhs/ib/cont-intro.htm The Internet Branch hopes you will find this site useful. Hi Listers, I am trying to find out information on old brewhouses, in particular, the brewhouse in Inworth, Essex. It shows on the census records of 1881. I would really appreciate it anyone could tell me a web address that would give me info on old brewhouses and maltings. I have become interested since finding possible ancestors that were Malsters. It is close to my heart as I work for a malting company. I have tried to find out info through work but they tell me there were so many it would be difficult to locate information and I thought I know I'll ask the Listers on Rootsweb as they know everything!!! (hopefully). TIA Tina HULL, CLOW, SPOONER, SAWARD, RAMSEY, DEACON, MARTIN
Does any one know if there is such a thing as a mailing list covering the medievil period, particularly the 13 and 1400's, for this area of England? Thank you- Audri
Like the great majority of Norwich's 30-plus medieval parish churches, St Michael at Plea is no longer used as a church. Other uses have been found for many of them, St Michael at Plea included, which is (and has been for many years) a permanent Craft and Antiques market. I've no idea about the records, except that the centre of Norwich was extensively bombed in World War II - including the destruction of three of the parish churches. Greetings... Another family rumour is that a woman from the mustard COLMANs married a man from the CORKE family, in Norwich or nearby. Is there anyone who has some information on this? Many thanks Dianne Corke Researching the CORK/CORKE family surname
Greetings... I would like to know where the records are from Saint Michael at Plea, in Norwich. Family rumour has it that they were burned at some time in the past. Is this true? I know that the church no longer functions as a church. Why is this so? Thank you Dianne corke. Researching the surname CORKE/CORK
My grandmother, Hannah CROWE, was born at North Cove, Suffolk which is close to the sea and to the Norfolk border. I am writing a book which includes all I can find of her life. Since I live in the USA, inland, there is much I do not know about what her life as a child would have been like in North Cove. She was born in 1869 and was sent to Ipswich to St. John's Orphanage/School when she was almost eight years old. Her father had been a fisherman, but is occasionally is listed as an agricultural labourer. I am in need of someone to tell me what she might have experienced and seen as a young child in that area. I am also interested in what her father, William CROWE, would have done as a fisherman--how he would have gone to the fishing boat etc. Any information that anyone can give me will not only be appreciated by myself, but a very large family of relatives who are interested in this history. Thank you. Lila Eubanks
Here is the last instalment of titles from my bookshelf of second hand books on Norfolk local history: 'Glimpses of Fiddaman's Lynn' by Rosemary & Stan Rodliffe published in 2000 (ISBN 0 9539356 0 4). [Just to prove that I don't always buy second hand!] Based around the life story of James Fiddaman, an eventually wealthy publican at King's Lynn. If you ever wondered what your Victorian ancestors did for entertainment - whether they lived in Lynn or elsewhere in Norfolk - this is the book for you. A fascinating collection of true stories mentioning literally hundreds of people. My best read yet. If anyone is interested, I have an index of names. 'Yes M'Lady - at home with the Ansons 1888 - 1900' by June Mary Harris published by Pentland Press in 1997 (ISBN 1 85821 513 7). An 'upstairs - downstairs' perspective based on the reminiscences of 'Philly' - Winifred Philpott - personal maid to Lady Anson of Shugborough Hall, Staffordshire with some interesting insights into life at Holkham Hall. 'Norfolk Nostalgia: Little Sisters' by Mary Hill published by Stylus in 1990 (ISBN 1 85620 091 4). Memories of steam trains to Sheringham, cycle rides along quiet roads, Cromer, Great Yarmouth, Sunday School treats. From Christmas in Norwich as an 8 year old with grandad MARRISON to performing with Breckland Drama Group in the 1960's. 'Reminiscences of a Fenman' by James Taylor published in 1980. Born at Fence Bank in 1912, the youngest and only son of six children; school at Walpole Highway; apprenticed as a bricklayer in 1926. Lots of nice stories. Orphan pigs suckled by a cow; soakings in the dyke; one early evening being mistaken for a ghost as he climbed out of a newly finished brick grave in Tilney St. Lawrence churchyard; pranks in the Rose & Crown at Terrington St. John... 'A Fine Strong Boy' by Kath Fryer published by Hollinfare (ISBN 0 9526994 2 7). The biography of Henry L'Strange Styleman Le Strange (1815 - 1862) who lived at Hunstanton Hall and founded the town of Hunstanton.
