Hello John - I don't if I can help, but my best friend is Judy and John Ayre, they live, in our village, and has done all of his life, he has a Younger brother Colin who also lives in our village and I am also very friendly with, they have an older sister who lives in Carlisle and an older brother Frank who died in the 1960's but lived in the London area, I think. John had his 65th Birthday in September. Strangely enough, John wife Judy is from Easingwold and had an uncle who taught in Barnsley, her maiden name is Idle. (which makes her an Idle Ayre !!!). John's father is buried in a village cemetery just outside Darlington called Croft, but it is just across the boundary of Durham and North Yorkshire - that maybe the reason you cannot find him.
