Has anyone ideas? I am looking into my GGGM who was married in the Ethley area. Elizabeth Pickering maried Sober Watkin Smith on 15th October 1843. SWS was a Pitman.. EP's father was called Thomas Pickering and was a Quarryman. The MCert says that they were married in the Parish church in the Parish of Auckland St Andrew. The residnce at the time of marriage was Etherley Lane. I have not found SWS and family on the 1851 census indexes for the area, and there are a number of TP's in the area who could possibly be the father. I have access to the 1841 census for Durham, but to save me scrolling through thousands of names in South West Durham, can anyone point me as to where Etherley lane might come under (Etherley in not one of the dsitricts mentioned), so that I can start at the most likely first? Also one of the witnesses at the wedding was Mary Ann Pickering who I assume would have been EP's sister. However according to the IGI there was a MAP who was married the year bfeore in the same parish. Could/would she have used her maiden name if she was a witness or is it more likely that the MAP married the year before was someone else? Thanking you in anticipation Colin
