In 1901 they were living at Blackgate............ • Census: 1901 Census, 1901, Blackgate, Coxhoe. 1901 REF: RG13/4683 COXHOE BLACKGATE JOHN CARRUTHERS, HEAD, M, 63, FARM LABOURER, WORKER, SCOTLAND. ISABELLA CARRUTHERS, WIFE, M, 53, SCOTLAND. LIZZIE CARRUTHERS, DAUR, S, 18, DRESSMAKER, OWN ACCOUNT AT HOME, SCOTLAND. ISABELLA CARRUTHERS, DAUR, S, 14, DURHAM, COXHOE. Now the family (plus 4 other sons, John, George, James & Thomas) came down from Dalbeattie, S/W Scotland sometime after 1881. My educated guess was about 1883 when a large employer closed down in the town and over a thousand people left seeking employment. In the 1901 census, son Thomas is married and living close by, there is no sign of John, a possible in the army for James, and my G-Grandfather George is nowhere to be seen. Bearing in mind that the youngest daughter Isabella was born in Coxhoe in 1887, I would have expected them to be there in 1891. I have recieved the census fiche from the Durham FHS but there is no CARRUTHERS listed... this leaves me wondering if they moved a few times in & out of the area. Has anyone got 1891 census index for neighbouring areas with CARRUTHERS listed? Or is there a full index transcribed anywhere? I am wondering where to go next... Thanks in advance for any input.
