    3. Does anyone know how to report errors in transcription in 1901 census? Of my 4 grandparents, one is Scots, so I had his details months ago. One, William POSTLETHWAITE, is transcribed as I would expect, e.g. his name is spelt correctly, even though it is quite difficult to spell. The other 2 both have their surnames spelt wrongly, which makes searching very difficult! My Elsie COX, who was born in Norton, Co. Durham. on 13th March 1901 (so only 2 weeks before the census) has turned into an Elsie COT. Her parents & sister are also COTs. Worse, my great aunt was Pamelia COX until she died in 1986, but the 1901 census has her as Prunelia COT. I also have GOULDING relatives in Berkshire & they have become GOLDING, which is understandable, but wrong. Can I feed this back anywhere?

If you go into the FAQ's you will find the following about three-quarters down the page. " What if I spot a mistake in the transcription? You can report errors in transcription via the Census Data Amendment facility." I would have simply post the URL to the amendment page, but, for some reason, a copied URL does not work. (must have something to do with Java??). The page also indicates "If agreed the change will be made and details posted periodically on the List of Census Data Amendments page". If you follow this link you will see that there have not yet been any corrections. The lack of any corrections was questioned and my understanding is that QinetiQ have indicated that they are holding off on all corrections until the site has passed the testing stage. Cheers, Gordon Hawthorne
