Hello Pat, That's very kind of you. William Thompson Kay was married in Liverpool in 1870 to Margaret Green. They raised their family in Toxteth Park, and pressumably he died there too. He is my gggrandfather. According to FreeBMD, the only William Thompson Kay born after 1837 was one who was registered in Stockton district Sept quater of 1853. The 1881 cencus ties in with this date of birth. And with having his full name already, I'm happy to take this as being the right person. However, on the census it is said that he was born in Liverpool (perhaps he had lived in Liverpool so long he had forgotten!). If it is possible to find anything from this, that would be great. But as I have no parent's or sibbling names, or address, then I don't know what can be done. I'll leave it with you, and perhaps prey for a miracle! Kind regards, Helen

Looking for descendants of Robert 37 and Elizabeth 33 Dawson. Robert, a blacksmith, was born in Rillington, Yks., 1844. On 1881 census Robert and Elizabeth had Jessie 12, and Evelyn 4. Same children listed in 1891. By 1901, Robert age 57 is living with Evelyn age 24 in Gateshead. He is a Brass Finisher, and she is a Trained Certificated Teacher. Robert had twin brother, William, a coal miner, who settled in Hetton-le-Hole. On 1881 Wm. 37 & Mary Jane 37 had children Alice Porter 11, Frederick Wm. 9, and Hubert Thomas 6. I was unable to find William on the 1891 or 1901, but did find a couple of William Dawsons on the mine accident list on Durham Mining Museum site. Any connections? Regards, Linda in So. Hello Folk I am a new subscriber to this list although I do sub to several others. I have just discovered my g grandfather Henry (Harry) Bernhard(t) probably owned a chain of picture theatres back in the earlier days of the 1900s. The name ABC was mentioned. His occupation was listed as "magic lantern maker" on birth certs of his children. He was married to Elizabeth Johns(t)on about 1880 in Durham - apparently one or both of them lived at a place called Spennymoor. The family story (which so far is fairly accurate) has him running fish and chip shops but always moving on to start a new one, leaving his wife to pack up the children and follow wherever and whenever he sent for her. One day she had had enough and the next time he moved on, so did she! He took up with a new lady but never married her nor apparently divorced my g gran. I do not know anything about this lady and possible or even probable family resulting. I have had from more than one family member that he died a rich man and left it all to "Miss ****" not Mrs Bernhard who was my g gran. Again from several sources, someone in the family searched for the will at somerset House but it was quite definitely all left to this "Miss" whoever. A search using google on ABC cinemas Bernhard London brought up a web site with the following snippet of information. <<<working on a nationwide chain of new movie palaces going under names such as Regal, Savoy and Ritz. In addition to the building programme, the ABC circuit grew through acquisition - one of the most notable being the October 1937 purchase of David Bernhard's Union Cinemas outfit, which had foundered as a result of its own regrettably over-ambitious construction schedule. A 1936 attempt to take over the Gaumont-British circuit from the Ostrer brothers proved abortive, the cinemas eventually becoming part of the Rank Organisation. In all, by 1945, ABC had 415 cinemas in operation.>>> I would appreciate any information anyone may be able to give me on this "David Bernhard's Union Cinemas outfit" or indeed on David or Henry Bernhardt and his family or families. Also, is there an easy way I can find the contents of Henry's will? Living on the other side of the world, I can't just call in! And of course if there is anyone else researching the same families, I would love to hear form you. thank you Dawn (Melbourne, Australia) researching Bernhard(t) (Durham and maybe Bradford) Firth (Bradford) Bossingham (Cambs / Norfolk) Burrows (Oxfordshire).

Hi Michelle, I'm not sure if you had this information already, but I have just checked the 1891 Census and I'm afraid the COLLEDGE family had moved on - 14 Ruby Street was occupied by a John I? BUSTON/BUXTON and family (Ref: RG12-3999 Folio 57 Page 53 - or 112/293 in the PDF file). What a wonderful set of set of street names Marske has though - Ruby Street along with Diamond, Pearl, Emerald, Garnett and Coral! Hello, I'm hoping someone can help me track a bunch of sons and their father who have disappeared somewhere between the 1881 and 1901 census. They appear in the 1881 census but I cannot find them in the 1901 census. I've checked the death indexes but I can find no trace of any of them. In 1881 I've found them at: 14 Ruby Street, Marske in Guisborough along with a sister (Sarah A) and their mother (Sarah A) and grandfather (Robert) all of which I've accounted for at later dates, the daughter, then married, being the only one alive for the 1901 census) COLLEDGE Father: George born Mar Qtr 1868 Whitby Sons: John Robert born Jun Qtr 1870 Whitby George L born Sep Qtr 1871 Whitby Sam born approx 1874 Whitby Albert born Sep Qtr 1878 Saltburn Edwin Born Sep Qtr 1878 Saltburn I've found a G College, listed as a grocer in Ruby Street in Bulmers directory 1890 for Markse, and also a G College listed as a lifeboat cox in Old Saltburn in Bulmers 1890 directory for Brotton. I know that the father George was present at his daughter Sarah's wedding in 1895 in Lanchester but under his profession he's listed as Ships captain I haven't been lucky enough to see the 1891 census and was wondering if someone could assist or offer advice on the next step because I'm completely at a loss as to what to do next. TIA Michelle

Hello I am looking for anyone who is researching the surname BEARDMORE. My grandfather, John Thomas BEARDMORE, was (possibly) born in Middlesboro in 1892. He then at some stage moved to Norton Le Moors in Staffs and married Harriett DAWSON in 1912. They had 5 children, one of whom, Lilian, was my mother. If anyone can relate to this family or knows where I may be able to find information, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards Stuart Marshall Milton Keynes, Bucks, UK.
