    1. [D'hamYorks] Francis SMITH Stockton-on-Tees , Durham look-up please?
    2. I`m attempting to find out further details of FRANCIS SMITH born in CHESTERFIELD (Derbyshire) around 1843 who in the 1881 Census appears as being a Railway Porter , married to HANNAH (nee BROWN) in YORK (St Mary Bishophill Snr)with a son GEORGE HENRY who was born in STOCKTON-ON-TEES , DURHAM in 1874. He was living in YORK with his widowed father-in-law HENRY BROWN (age 64 born c.1817) who was also a Railway Porter. Francis does not appear in the Derbyshire 1851 Census so where was he between 1843 and 1881? As his son was born in DERBY STREET ,STOCKTON-ON-TEES ,DURHAM in 1874 is there any other record of the family in the Durham area? (census etc?) Can anyone help please? Thanks in anticipation. Peter

    1. [D'hamYorks] Gazettes Online - a new web site.
    2. Ian Hartas
    3. Dear All, I recently received the message below from an ex-collleague of mine. It looks to be a really useful site. The only thing that I'd like to add to the notes below is that when you find a page of interest in the early documents, you will not be able to search it using your browser's own search (Ctrl/F), you must use the 'Search' option within the web page itself. Some of the results pages are large and may take time to download. If you want to supply feedback on the site, DON'T send it to me or this list, use the 'Contact Us' link under the 'About Us' menu on the web site itself. Don't break it too quickly ! ;-)) Subject: Fwd: Gazettes Online Date: 15/10/2002 14:47:16 Hi Ian. I thought you might like to know about the latest site my company's launched. We've had people busy scanning and OCR-ing a century's worth of paper archive of the London, Edinburgh and Belfast Gazettes (the official UK newspaper of record, published by the Parliamentary Press - now part of TSO). Having got all the data out of the documents via OCR, we've generated searchable PDF documents. The PDF's are just TIFF images, but also contain OCR data including the locations of words so they can be searched and highlighted. On top of this we've put a search engine so that you can, for example, search for any mention of Hartas in the Gazettes between 1900 and 1997 (the ones from 1998 onward are available in proper electronic form). So if a Hartas won a military medal or other official honour, you'll find out about it! Have fun at http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk -------- End of forwarded message -------- -- regards, Ian Hartas ---------------------------------- Why is it that the word "gullible" isn't in the dictionary? ----------------------------------

    1. [D'hamYorks] SISSON and THUBRON
    2. My 2nd g.grandmother was Catherine SISSON, born according to the 1881 census, in Leicester, England in about 1812. She married Anthony THUBRON on 21 April 1838 in Sedgefield, County Durham, and died in Saltburn, Yorks, near Marske, in 1882. (In the 1881 census transcription by the LDS her name is mis-spelled as Thutron). Strangely, a John THOBRON married firstly a Sarah SISSONS in Sedgefield on 30 July 1798, then another Catherine SISSONS on 25 Nov. 1800, also in Sedgefield. I can't find a christening for my Catherine around 1812. Does anybody have any connection with these SISSON(S)? Adrian in South Hants.

    3. Good Evening All I am doing a little research into the above-named families for my boss' mother as a surprise Christmas present. I have got quite a bit of information already and she doesn't want me to try to go back too far but I have the bit between my teeth now and want to follow something up. Her mother seems to think that the GRUNDY family had a chainmaking business and I wondered if anyone with directories for this area would be kind enough to look and see if they can find anything in them. I, obviously, don't wish to pay out for resources which I am unlikely to use again and would be willing to return the favour for anyone looking in London as I have various directories for that area. Thanks very much for your time Ann Twite Norfolk

    3. Entire when used in reference to a horse means it is still fully equipped as a stallion and not gelded. At least it does these days.. Wish I could find my g grandfather Henry Bernhard(t) round 1891 onwards. He should be in Auckland Durham round 1891 as the last child was born there. Later he took up with a Miss Wood I believe and had another family.. May have been connected with the Union cinema chain - anyone able to help? Good luck Dawn (Melbourne Australia) -----Original Message----- From: Sharon D [mailto:sharon4726@yahoo.co.uk] Sent: Tuesday, 15 October 2002 6:45 PM To: ENG-DURHAM-YORKS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [D'hamYorks] James Abbott - Catterick Hello all! I think I have made a breakthrough in tracking down my gg grandfather who has eluded me so far. He married my gg grandmother even though she had just had another man's child 2 or 3 weeks previously, and then appears to have been absent most of the time apart from popping back to get my gg grandmother pregnant again with my g grandmother! There is a James ABBOTT listed on Bulmer's trade directory of 1890 for Catterick and I think (well - hope!) this may be him. I wonder if anybody has access to the 1891 census for Catterick to check the listing for any ABBOTT's thereabout for me. My gg grandfather would have been 35 (ish) at the time. Also, he is listed as "owner of entire horse" (which I find quite amusing) - and I wonder where the terminology came from - why don't they just say "owner of horse"? Does anyone know if Catterick Racecourse would have been functioning in 1890? Thank you for any help in tracking down this rascal! 1. Re: [D'hamYorks] James Abbott - Catterick
    2. My 3rd great-grandfather was William ABBOTT. Birthplace, unknown; he married Jane BROWN, from Richmond, in Catterick on May 2 1803. They then lived in Richmond and had 12 children; the oldest, George Brown ABBOTT was my 2nd great grandfather, the oldest child, born about 1803. William was a labourer; George was a tailor. I have a complex tree of some of the descendants of William; there were so many children, that they founded quite an Abbott dynasty in the area. If this looks like it may be connected to your Abbott, let me know the details and I will see if I can connect up and give you the links. Adrian
