    1. [D'hamYorks] Bradbury - Cheshire
    2. How far back are you with the Bradbury's? I am researching them in Nottinghamshire, the earliest I have is a marriage in 1680, but am trying to connect it to Luke Bradbury born 1702 to a John Bradbury in Hucknall Torkard, Notts. There do not appear to be any earlier records for Bradburys in the Notts area. Regards Jean Dixon

    1. [D'hamYorks] My COATES wall
    2. Tim Coates
    3. I was wondering if SKS/Miracle Worker could help me with my 'wall' that I have been at for over a year now. I have my COATES line going back to a Robert COATES. I do not know where or when he was born but it almost certainly is somewhere within North Yorkshire (probably between or near to the A1 / A19) and circa the 1770's to 1780's. From the Quarter Sessions Division of Gilling East in the North Riding of Yorkshire (from MicroFilm at the Archives in Northallerton) he may have been an Innkeeper in Smeaton (Great Smeaton I assume ?) between 1793 and 1808. There is a possibility that he was the illegitimate son of Sarah COATES of Harlsey Castle, North Yorks, born Jan 12 1782. This is from the Parish Register for Northallerton. He married Elizabeth THOMPSON on 5 May 1808 at the Collegiate Church, Ripon, North Yorkshire (now the Cathedral). Elizabeth was born 28 April 1781 in Kirby Sigston, North Yorks. I'm fairly sure about this date as it is from a family Bible. She was a widow and had previously been married to John SCURFIELD (may also be documented as SCHOFIELD) possibly on 22 Oct 1799 (according to the IGI). They had 3 children between 1802 and 1806 one of whom was born in Thirsk. The marriage banns/Parish Register entry described Robert as a 'Robert COATES of Ripon in the County of York - Servant Man' and Elizabeth as 'Elizabeth SCURFIELD of the Parish of Cundale in the same county - Widow' and was witnessed by Ann HAYGARTH and Richard SHEPHERD. Robert gives his age as 26 which ties in nicely with his potential birth date of 1782. Elizabeth gives hers as 22, apparently exagerating/not knowing ones age was common place ? Robert and Elizabeth had the following children. Thomas COATES born 25 Feb 1809 in Northallerton, William Thompson COATES born 18 Jan 1811 in Sunderland and Robert COATES born 13 Jul 1814 in Sunderland. Elizabeth died 11 May 1816. No idea what happened to Robert after 1814. There is a record in the Sunderland Parish Registers of a marriage between Robert COATES and Mary HARPER on 17 Nov 1820 but I have no idea if this is 'my' Robert or not. I am assuming he would re-marry as it would be unlikely he could support 3 small children on his own ? My questions are : If he was born 1782 could he have been an Innkeeper at the tender age of 11 and where would he have got his £10 fee from ? The last date of his licence of 1808 ties in quite nicely with his marriage to Elizabeth but that could just be coincidence. If he was an Innkeeper would he have been described as a 'Servant Man' on his Marriage record ? If either of Roberts parents were alive would it be expected that they would be marriage witnesses rather than someone else ? Are there any Census returns for Sunderland for 1811 or 1821 and if so would anyone be willing to look for Robert and his 3 children. Also would these early cencuses have his date and place of birth detailed ? Is it likely that Robert would have re-married ? Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions. Tim Coates

    3. Dear All, On my web site I have photos of an old gatepost in Yorkshire which has carved references to Francis HARTUS, which is in Glaisdale. I've also found reference to another carved stone which, so the reference tells me, is in 'Harding Gill' I've now been asked where is 'Harding Gill' ? The ususal sources of Streetmap and Genuki can't find any reference to the place. It's likely to be North Yorks moors area. Can anyone place it ? http://www.hartas.org/francis_stone.html if you are interested in the carving. -- regards, Ian Hartas ------------------------------------------------- I love deadlines. 1. [D'hamYorks] HALL's in Middlesbrough
    2. David HALL
    3. Hi Gill I have recently discovered several HALL families in the 1881 census in middlesbrough which I believe to be ancestors. They all originate from a family in Hutton Rudby in 1851/1861. I have found the unusual name Robinson HALL cropping up several times over the census years. The families I have found in 1881 are Charles HALL (60) + family, Stockton St, Middlesbrough Jane HALL (49) + family, High Wilson St, Mid. Robinson HALL (30) Fleetham St, Mid. Joseph HALL (46) Northallerton Thomas HALL (41) High Dean St, Mid. These 5 families include another 29 HALL's, too many to mention here!! I've also found related families in Hutton Rudby and Ingleton (my great grandfather). Looking on the IGI I've found "possible" ancestors back to 1759 in Whorlton. Let me know if you notice any connections Kind Regards (and fingers crossed!!) I've done a lot of HALL research, mostly centered in the Middlesbrough area, but I do have a small links with Scarborough and Hartlepool as well. How far back have you managed to get? Gill Walmsley London, UK >>> dave@bishop69.fsnet.co.uk 23:25:14 28 October 2002 >>> hi Judith Thankyou so much for looking this up for me! more than I could imagine!! There's a few questions I hope you can answer for me.... In the 1841 census eliza HALL 17 yrs, should it be months with her being the last entry? Also in 1841 do you know what FS stands for for Elizabeth? In 1861 census, I read it as Benjamin son of Charles and Mary, Benjamin's wife Jane and their children Robinson, John and Mary Ann. Would you agree?? Still trying to find them in 1881. I've had some luck with a list of Hutton Rudby MI's so I'm certainly on my way!! Just need a few weeks off work now! 3. My great grandmother was Isabella HULL b. St. Helens Auckland l853. Her elder sister was Mary Ann HULL, b. St. Helens Auck. l846. Mary Ann married Edward SURTEES, Clerk, in l872 at St. Helens. Edward was born in Darlington in l849 son of William SURTEES, Clerk. By l88l the family were living at 26 Charles St., Hedworth Monkton, Jarrow, Durham, where Edward was a police constable. It would appear the family moved to Jarrow around l878. Children: John Edwin, b. l873-4 St. Helens Auck. Mary, b. l875, West Auckland Annie Isabella b. l877 St. Helens Auck. Jennie, b. l879, Jarrow William, b. l883 Jarrow Helen, b. l885 Jarrow Frederick, b. l888 Jarrow By l90l Edward was widowed. He was now a driller at the shipyard, living with his younger children at l30 Ellison Street, Jarrow. Intriguingly I have found the death of John Edwin SURTEES (b. l874) on the IGI. Date of death given as l9 Feb. l9l8. I checked this out in the Birth Register and his death, is indeed, to be found in the March Qtr of l9l8 aged 44. On the IGI it says that the "record was submitted after l99l by a member of the LDS Church. No additional information is available". I suppose this also means that someone else has been researching him? Would be delighted to hear from anyone else with links to this family. Regards Diane Johansen
