    1. [D'hamYorks] Ayres - Darlington and Barnsley
    2. I don't know if anyone can help as I am having great difficulty finding information on my GGM Jane Ayre and her family who came from Barnsley. She married a John Smith on Xmas Day in Darlington 1862. Her father was Thomas Ayre. She was, according to the marriage certificate, aged 24 so her birth year would have been around 1838. I cannot find them on the 1861 or 1851 Darlington Census. ( ON the 1881 and subsequent censuses her origins were Barnsley. On the 1851 census there were 2 boys a Thomas and a William who were down as living in the workhouse (aged 11 and 9), they were both from Barnsley. I have been sent the Barnsley 1851 census which shows a John Ayre from darlington and an Ayres from Darlington. Can anyone help please? Thank you all in anticipation and a Happy New Year! Colin Smith

    3. Margaret, you are correct that the 1881 British (?) Census on the LDS web site does not cover Scotland. If so, I would be very grateful for the following lookup: William Robinson b. 1832 Loftus (Yorks). Some time ago I did find William on the 1881 census visiting his in-laws in Scotland, but can't remember/find the details. The online census doesn't seem to cover Scotland unfortunately (unless I am doing something wrong). I believe he was an ironstone miner. Many thanks. Margaret

    1. [D'hamYorks] Marriage certificates
    2. m.oshea1
    3. Further to my message of a couple of months ago regarding whether the absence of any mention of the father of the bride or groom being deceased could be taken as confirmation that he was alive. Some listers replied that this wasn't always the case. This message is just to confirm that they were quite right. I have AT LAST discovered what happened to my 2 x gt. grandparents John and Jane Robinson (nee Cook) who I had been unable to find between 1831 (Stockton) and the second half of the 1840's when their children were back in Brotton/Skelton area. The first three marriage certificates I have for the children (1846, 1847 and 1859) do not mention that the father (John) was deceased. The fourth (1864) did say he was deceased. This lead me to believe that he must have died between 1859 and 1864. After a lot of research I had got nowhere. However, after a breakthrough just before Christmas, I found that John's widowed wife Jane had remarried in 1840 (Stockton district), and again in 1846 (Brotton). A combination of use of the online 1881 census and Familysearch finally did the trick (1881 census search for a Janes born 1803 in Yorkshire found a Jane Cuthbert (born Moorsholm) living at Brotton married to a Frankland Cuthbert). A check on Familysearch for their marriage found th! at Frankland married a Jane Hutchinson OR Cook. From this I assumed that this Jane's maiden name was Cook. A check of Free BMB found the marriage of Jane Robinson to a William Hutchinson in the Stockton District in 1840 - this has been confirmed as Jane Robinson (nee Cook) of the correct age. Hopefully the above may help other listers who may be having similar problems. I now believe that John (sailor) was the John Robinson aged 36 buried at St. Thomas Stockton on 6th December 1831, 5/6 weeks after the baptism of their last child. The family were living in Brunswick Street four years earlier. I had hoped he would have survived longer so that I could have found some records of him amongst the marine records at the PRO (Kew) but unfortunately this date is too early. If any lister has any information on Stockton newspapers/ ships etc of 1831 I would be grateful. Happy New Year to all. Margaret O'Shea (nee Robinson)

    3. Hi Diane Don't know if this will help or confuse you more. To my knowledge there is no Thorpe Village. But if you follow the A177 North Westerly from Stockton -on -Tees it used to go through the Village of Thorpe Thewels and still goes through Thorpe Larches. Grindon is just east of the A177 and, in the same area west of the A177 Thorpe Leazes. Grindon had a church until the new one (1848) was built at Thorpe Thewels See http://website.lineone.net/~pjoiner/genuki/DUR/Grindon/#ChurchRecords If You go to www.streetmaps.co.uk and enter Grindon as a place name one of the choices will be Grindon Stockton-on -Tees and you should be able to find all the places mentioned above. -------Original Message------- From: ENG-DURHAM-YORKS-L@rootsweb.com Date: 29 December 2002 22:26:09 To: ENG-DURHAM-YORKS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [D'hamYorks] Thorpe& Grindon?? 3. Diane, Thorpe Thewles and Grindon came at one time under the Wynyard Estate not sure if this was still the case in 1901. Thorpe Thewles and Grindon are about 4 miles from Wolviston and in 1901 came under Durham as the county.
