Hi everyone Has anybody got access to the 1861 or 1871 census for the Ingleton area (near Staindrop)?? Looking for William (aged 63 in 1861) and Ann WHITE (aged 63 in 1861 also). In 1881 William had died and Ann was living at Todwell House, Ingleton with her granddaughter and family. Any help is much appreciated Kind Regards David
Hello, I am researching the CASTLE family from Allergate, Durham Is anyone else interested in this family? Please let me know if you are.
Hi Sue Thanks for reply. You guessed correctly I am looking for his 2nd marriage the igi info you have sent re Annaliza PENNOCK could well be his 1st marriage I missed that one on my igi search.Thank you. The chrs 1840 at St hedda R.C. Church is I feel to early but I could be wrong.I also suspect his parents to be MATTHEW ROE bn 1810 + ANN WHITE bn 1814 married Egton 1840. child WILLIAM ROE Bapt 1st june 1844,MARY 1842,ANN 1846,GEORGE 1851,JOHN 1852 and HANNAH ROE 1858. The 1901 Census at 40 Charlotte St West Hartlepool shows. WILLIAM ROE HD married 56 gen labourer bn Egton.Wife ELLEN ROE 41 bn Stockton Durham. WILLIAM ROE son s 17 app plasterer bn w. Hartlepool .FLORENCE ROE dtr s 15 bn W.Hartlepool.MATTHEW ROE son s 13 bn <nimthorpe> Yorks.ELLEN ROE dtr s 11 bn Middlesbrough.ISSABELLA ROE dtr s 8 bn Middlesbrough.JOHN ROE son s 6 bn W.Hartlepool.ANN ROE dtr s 3 bn W.Hartlepool.This WILLIAM ROE app plasterer was my G/F He died 1942 at Wallasey Wirral Cheshire.occ at that time was master plasterer. The 1881 census extracts you quote I do have this is the one I favour as a result of his 1st marriage WILLIAM ROE hd W age 36 bn Egton occ blk smith. FRED ROE son age 14 bn Egton app carpenter.ANNIE JANE ROE dtr age 11 bn Egton.Yorks. The 1901 census WILLIAM ROE bn 1884 and occ app plasterer bn West Hartlepool matches my G/F,s details 100%. He also had 2 marriages he apparently had 2-3 children by his 1st wife whom he left to elope with my G/M HENRIETTA CHARLOTTE KNOWLSON by whom he had issue LORNA ROE bn 1914.LENOARD,DONALD,IVY,DERECK,GRANVILLE and 2 others gender u/kn these were the 1st born who died very young prior to 1914 probably. HE eventually married HENRIETTA shortly before his death in 1942 I suspect that his first wife had died allowing him to remarry he was a R.C. at birth but renounced his religion possibly because his 1st wife would not give him a divorce. She apparently emmigrated some family members say to India others say U.S.A. Possibly with or without the children of the 1st marriage.Quite a mine-field to negotiate. If any of this makes sense to you or any on the list who may see a connection Please get back to me. My Grateful Thanks to you Sue and also Grenville Davies and Helen Mitter who have given me previous family links off list. Best Regards to all Ron
Could someone with more local knowledge please advise my next step? We have located the death of my 3 x g.grandfather, James BELL (b. Hutton Rudby, N. Yorks l790). James left Hornby (nr. Gt. Smeaton) and his work on the land, some time after l85l. By l855 he was working as a railway labourer on the Stockton & Darlington Railway. On 3rd October l855 he was "accidentally killed" by being hit by the "tender of an engine" at Middridge. His death cert. was signed by Thomas THORNTON, Dep. Coroner Bishop Auckland. We believe the nearest place to Middridge on the railway would have been Shildon Junction. Could I ask which current library local to Middridge may have searchable newspaper archives from that time - and also, how I would find out whether coroners records were kept. I have heard that they are normally destroyed after a certain time. It occurred to me that there may be a third source of information in view of it being an accident on the railways - would the local rail board have records? Any possible lead would be most gratefully acknowledged. Regards Diane Johansen

Rory, The IGI has a marriage in 1865 in Egton of William ROE born about 1842, to Annaliza PENNOCK, who was born 6 June 1846 in Egton, Yorks, daughter of James PENNOCK and Hannah OXLEY. Might you be looking for a second marriage? It also offers a christening of William ROE on 6 Jul 1840, at St. Hedda RC, Egton, Yorks, son of Thomas ROE and Mary Ann FRANKLOAND. As I understand it, the price of obtaining B, M, & D certificates is going up sometime in the next few months. Since there are a number from the Durham area I need, I'm hoping someone can give me some advice regarding obtaining them through the post in the most expeditious fashion. In many cases I know the St. Catherine's index numbers, in other cases specific dates, and in a few, just guesstimates of dates. I've been told that the cheapest & most straightforward way is to get them from the local registry office. Most of the events occurred in Kelloe Parish, so which office would I need to contact? And what information will they need in order to produce a certificate. Are there options, e.g., photocopy versus certified copy, and what are the prices? If anyone can shorthand this and forward a web address where I could get this info, that would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time and consideration. Dave Moore, Webster, New York, USA
Hi Pat, I would be interested in the 1861 census information on these families as I have found that Elizabeth Inniss husband Rodger DEA and their son John (Edward) DEA in the New York, US on the US 1880 census, living in a boarding house. On the census it is listed that Rodger Dea is married but have not be able to find Elizabeth or her daughters. Also on the English 1881 Census can't find what happened to William INNES and his wife Hannah Spink and their family or Susannah BAKER nee INNISS or her daughters. At the moment I am reading the film for marriages 1866-1888 St Thomas Church, Stockton in the hope of finding the marriages for the female Baker members of my line. Don't know if Susannah Baker nee Inniss remarried or not and this is why I can't find her on the 1881 census.Keep your fingers crossed that I get some answers to these question from this film and not another lot of just questions. Will be away for 10 days from the 8th Feb., off to see the grandchildren . Posting my interest. I am studying the history and migration of the PORTEOUS and PORTEUS families (as well as other variant spellings, such as PORTAS, PORTESS, PORTIS, PORTICE, PORTUS - amongst many others). I'm researching the history and spread of the above names especially the migration of members of any branches of this formerly small Borders family from southern Scotland - initially to England and Ireland, then to the US and Canada - and later to the former British colonies of New Zealand, Australia and South Africa (from the 17th through to the early 20th centuries), and the main original areas of settlement (cities, provinces and states). County Durham and North Yorkshire are known to have contained clusters of PORTEOUS families from the eighteenth century onwards. Any confirmed information regarding dates of emigration or arrival and places of origin and settlement would be appreciated.
