Diane, There is a good chance you may find some reference to the accident of James Bell in the S&D records in the PRO at Kew. The class number for most of the S&D records are Rail/667/xxx and I see that Rail/667/1265 which is correspondance of the police dept. re. accidents naming those injured or killed. There are other records that may help, such as Board of Trade inquiries into accidents which will be found in Rail1053. I have a copy of a single page from the News of the World for Aug. 27th l911 and have found the following references to "Wills of the Week!" which mention the following names: Alderman Edward Booth WOODHEAD, Trafford House, Edgerton, Huddersfield Mr Robert CLOUGH, Beechcliffe House, Keighley, Yorks Mr William R.E. WADDINGHAM, Old Elvet, Durham Alderman Samuel BORDER, Grimston Hill, near York There is an extra paragraph on Alderman WOODHEAD, "woollen merchant" which mentions his daughter, Grace Eliza WINSLOW. Regards Diane Johansen
Anything on the Darlington & Stockton Railway is likely to be reported in the Darlington & Stockton Times. Unfortunately neither Darlington nor Northallerton libraries have the films covering September / October 1855. Both have the films up to 1853 (ish) and then there is a gap to 1870+ The British Library at Colindale holds copies (according to the local newspaper reference book). The Northern Echo, which would also have covered the area didn't start until 1870. Dear All A friend kindly spent a day at Durham RO yesterday trying to track down any mention of my 3 x g.grandfather's demise on October 3rd l855. James BELL died at Middridge from injuries received in an accident on the Stockton and Darlington Railway. His death certificate tells us that the informant was Thomas THORNTON, Deputy Coroner Bishop Auckland on l3th October l855 - so I would assume there was an inquest. My friend was hoping to find mention of this accident and checked the Durham Chronicle, the Durham Advertiser and the Bishop Auckland Herald. Unfortunately she could find nothing in the first two papers and all editions of the Bishop Auckland Herald post October l855 were missing and she was sure he would have been mentioned in the following edition. The next edition available was for Sept. l856. Also, the RO don't keep will references there - apparently they are kept at University Archives "elsewhere in Durham". Can anyone advise? Rather than giving up at this first hurdle, can anyone suggest further information sources? I have checked the British Library Newspaper Archives Index and their copies of the Bishop Auckland Herald don't start until l857 so that's no help. As the accident was on the railway could there possibly have been specific railway records kept? I know I'm grasping at straws but I'm trying to think of any way possible to find out what happened to James. Grateful thanks Diane Johansen

Hello everyone Going through some of my old folders I came across the following which may help someone who is new to the Rootsweb lists. In July 1999 Carol posted a list of names of those buried in Wetherby, in alphabetical order. The Subject is Burials at Wetherby and the site is the Yorksgen archives at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl There were other parish records published around this time (1998-1999) from both NRY and ERY villages eg Skipwith, Skirpenbeck, South Milford, Slingsby, Kirbymisperton, Kirbymoorside, Hovingham, Huntington, Stamford Bridge, Stillingfleet, Thorganby, Sheriff Hutton all transcribed by Patricia Porter. Mark Gatenby did Egton Bridge in May 1999 and Sand Hutton in June 1999 and Carlton Minniott in March 1999 Chris Ireland did North Burton in January 1999 Mike Breary did Mirfield in May 1999 Pat Cook did Eastrington in March 1999 Jeaner44 did Cayton in November 1999 Well worth a browse for those with folk in the area especially now you know a name and date to chase for the postings Apologies to those who get cross postings of this but I think some of the newer folk may find the information useful. Cheers Caroline
My mother was born 12 July 1916 at South Bank Gas Works (her father was the manager), Middlesbrough, North Yorks. My grandfather, Samuel Shadbolt, was a member of Eston Urban Council and the North Riding County Council, according to his obituary report in the North Eastern Daily Gazette in 1928. So I would definitely go along with Middlesbrough being in Yorkshire! Dorothy Smart, Altrincham Cheshire. --=======3EA831BD======= Content-Type: text/plain; x-avg-checked=avg-ok-6AFF5F45; charset=iso-8859-1; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Hi folks I am researching CARRUTHERS in Coxhoe, Durham. In 1901 they were living at Blackgate............ Census: 1901 Census, 1901, Blackgate, Coxhoe. 1901 REF: RG13/4683 COXHOE BLACKGATE JOHN CARRUTHERS, HEAD, M, 63, FARM LABOURER, WORKER, SCOTLAND. ISABELLA CARRUTHERS, WIFE, M, 53, SCOTLAND. LIZZIE CARRUTHERS, DAUR, S, 18, DRESSMAKER, OWN ACCOUNT AT HOME, SCOTLAND. ISABELLA CARRUTHERS, DAUR, S, 14, DURHAM, COXHOE. Now the family (plus 4 other sons, John, George, James & Thomas) came down from Dalbeattie, S/W Scotland sometime after 1881. My educated guess was about 1883 when a large employer closed down in the town and over a thousand people left seeking employment. In the 1901 census, son Thomas is married and living close by, there is no sign of John, a possible in the army for James, and my G-Grandfather George is nowhere to be seen. Bearing in mind that the youngest daughter Isabella was born in Coxhoe in 1887, I would have expected them to be there in 1891. I have recieved the census fiche from the Durham FHS but there is no CARRUTHERS listed... this leaves me wondering if they moved a few times in & out of the area. Has anyone got 1891 census index for neighbouring areas with CARRUTHERS listed? Or is there a full index transcribed anywhere? I am wondering where to go next... Thanks in advance for any input.
