    1. [D'hamYorks] Where is ? - A useful web site.
    2. Ian Hartas
    3. Dear All, I've often seen the question asked 'Where is this place ?' and also 'Are there photos of the area ?' Here's a possible answer to both of these: http://www.multimap.co.uk This web site has been mentioned before on these lists, but there's now an enhancement to the Multimap site that makes it more interesting - the ability to show a photo and overlay it with a street map. For example, this long web address : http://www.multimap.co.uk/map/photo.cgi?client=public&x=370642&y=351911&scale=5000&width=500&height=310&gride=370642&gridn=352161&rt=overlay.htm (which should arrive as one long line) will download and show an ariel view of my house, and then overlay the photo with a streemap of the area. The map section moves around as you move your mouse around the photo. Be patient, it takes a while to load. -- regards, Ian Hartas ------------------------------------------------- There are only 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary, and those who don't. -------------------------------------------------

    3. Hi everybody, Just returned from a wonderful quiet holiday on the Norfolk Broards. Walking through uncharted countryside I noticed a headstone which had been erected alongside a very tiny dirt track. Whilst no one would have noticed it someone from the British Legion has done a wonderful job in ensuring that a wooden cross is placed there every year. Last year's cross still looking new. The details are as follows but I apologise for the lack of information as I didn't think I would need pen and paper in such a desolated spot, so All I've managed to remember are the names and date. Hope it helps someone out there. The headstone is the normal WW2 design but with the USA Airforce emblem on the top. The top lines states In memory of T. AITKEN J.BLACK both USAF Lt's. Crashed nearby on 14.11.1944 Hope they belong to someone. regards John HUME researching HUME in Durham and Yorkshire SKELTON in Yorkshire DARLEY anywhere. HOLIDAY in York. 3. Hi Jenny, I was able to download about 20 images or so yesterday (very impressed with the quality by the way). The viewer was not working as it should - I could only save one image (using the pull down menus on the viewer rather than the button) before suspending my session and then closing down the browser and starting again. Yes, this was a painful way of doing it but I got there in the end. I guess I am one of the lucky ones - I have found nearly all the ancestors I was expecting to find at this time and as several elderly parents were now living with the not-quite-as-elderly children I have managed to get a little further back on some lines and add in some names. Only one slight transcription on the surname of my gg-grandfather too. Hope this helps and good luck! I already got the info from 1901 census from archives.barnsley.gov.uk ,so before when i was checking , it said people not found.so I tested it with this info I know is true and correct absolutely.. is it possible that I thought it was for all uk not just eng-durham area and thats why i cant get info on search... or is it something else, I am fairly new at all this. The initial obvious links kept giving me no result, just that the site was off line, but the 1901 census online tag at the bottom of the screen ( the white on green link) got me in and I spent the last 4 hours and about 15 pounds which is about 45-50 dollars Australian I learnt through mistakes. One of them is if you do get in and decide to view a page..save it onto your hard drive. The quality is superb compared to the printed version. When I have sorted out what I have I will dpost all the names on the various pages..maybe someone else will have some of them. Have you been to the *NEW* DURHAM or YORKSHIRE Message Boards? Take a tour today & learn how time-saving those *Gateway* messages are compared to findING new posts on your own.
