Hello Listers, I'm looking for advice please. I found a GRO reference for an 1841 birth certificate using '1837online' having failed to get results with FreeBMD searches. The ONS are telling me that the name I want is not under the GRO reference I have quoted. I've checked the scanned image on 1837online again and whilst it is handwritten there are no bad figures in it so I am confident that it is clearly legible. ONS have said the website I have used is not theirs, the reference is wrong and that I should check the reference on another website - but they would/could not suggest one when I asked where else I could check it. Can anyone suggest other site where one can check GRO references? Thanks in advance. Chris
Hello Chris, What was the full name and quarter in 1841? Dear Chris and list One way of finding out is to locate the local registrar office and supply them with the details of the birth etc but not the references as these are only used by ONS, and they even get them wrong! You often get the certificate by return of post! I did when looking for one in Birmingham, ONS could not locate the one I had found in their own index and charged me for it and I waited a month. I contacted the local registrar and had the copy within 2 days! Hope this helps. John Rowley ____________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
