Hi Pamela, If you go to the FreeBMD website at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl and do a search for births Mary Boardman then in the results page there is one which might be yours. Births registered March 1875/Darlington - Mary Elizabeth Boardman. Do you think this might be the one? Regarding the 1881 census - have you checked for alternative spellings? There is for example on the 1881 census at http://www.familysearch.org/ a Mary E Beardman aged 6, born Darlington, living in Markfield, Leicester with parents Peter and Elizabeth and brothers John F and Thomas H. Hope this helps a bit and is not a wild goose chase.
